i can't add/remove program on windows XP i get this error:

InstallShield (R) Setup Launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I have tried everything from safe mode to deleting the files but it comes the write protected and can't delete. I can't do system restore because i dont know when it was installed.

I'm going to throw it out the window cause it is slowing the computer starting up and shuting down.

    any idea's?

    No answers...

But I would try the following and see what happens.

Disconnect from Net and switch off you AV then Try and Add / Remove programs.

Check and make sure your IsUninst.exe file is in C:\WINDOWS under XP incase it got deleted randomly.

I really dont know if sounds like its corrupted in some way, you could also try check under Start, Run, MSCONFIG and see whats loading on Startup .. random but maybe something in their is causing the problem ..

Have a look under microsoft newsgroups and if all else fails you could try and repair xp from the CD.

Sorry I dont have more ideas at the moment, best of luck

More ideas for you to try, you need the CD for this. Also whats your OS I keep thinking your Xp ...

    Solution 1

On Windows NT, 2000, or XP, the error usually occurs because of corruption with the Windows Installer Service.

On Windows 95, 98, or ME, error 1101 occurs if there is a conflict between the version of the Windows Installer msi.dll file on the system and the one being installed by the installer. This error usually occurs if the version of msi.dll on your computer is 2.0.2600.2, and the version being installed by the installer is 2.0.2600.1 or earlier.

    Fix
    Windows NT/2000/XP

You may need to unregister, then register the Windows Installer Service.

    Click Start > Run.
Type msiexec.exe /unregister and click OK.
    Click Start > Run.
Type msiexec.exe /regserver and click OK.
Run the installation again. This should install the Windows Installer Service.
If this fix does not work, download and install the latest Windows Installer Service. For more information, see How Do I Install the Windows Installer Engine on My Computer?

    Windows 95/98/ME

To fix this issue, delete the msi.dll file on your computer.

Determine what operating system you are running.
Refer to the Microsoft article on Error 1101.
Scroll down to the heading: How to Delete the Msi.dll File.
The article has steps to delete the file on Windows 98 and ME. If you are using Windows 95, follow the instructions under Windows 98.
Run your installation again. This should install the Windows Installer Service.

    Solution 2

How Do I Install the Windows Installer Engine on My Computer?

As a troubleshooting step to guarantee proper installation, you may need to make sure that the Windows Installer Service is properly installed on your computer. Installations that are based on the Windows Installer Service require the MSI engine to be installed properly to ensure smooth installation. Most installations based on the Windows Installer Service automatically install the MSI engine on the computer prior to running the installation. In case of an error or other unexpected behavior, you may need to install the MSI engine manually. This article walks you through the process of:

Locating or downloading the Windows Installer Service (MSI engine)
Installing the Windows Installer Service (MSI engine) on your computer
Note: Windows XP already contains Windows Installer version 2.0. Thus, you should not have to install the Windows Installer Service (MSI engine) on Windows XP.

Last question, if all that doesnt work, Did you install any new hardware recently ? like a new HD ?

msconfig / autoruns from sysinternals to see where it is starting up from

I'm not sure what the story is on the c:\windows\installer folder

msicuu is a m$ utility to clean stuff down - but you may have to reinstall the app when you find it before removing it.
