replacement xp home cd?

A friend of mine royally fooked up her laptop, won't even boot now, it seems to be some disk error or other.

So to help her out I said I'd try and sort it, the firs order of business is to check if it will boot from a CD - to rule out any motherboard issues.

However, the laptop's only 6 months old, but she says she's got no CD's or anything for it, but there an XP home edition license sticker (with code) on the bottom, so all I needs is a CD.

Will microsoft give one out if I supply the valid license code? or even better can I download a copy, burn it and use that?

    Any suggestions appreciated.

I'd say that the sticker states OEM - this means the OS is supplied by the computer manufacturer...
so,no: you go to the comp. manufacturer rather than MS for OS issues..

What make and model is the computer?
Chances are that a recovery may be performed from a hidden partition.. (which can be activated on bootup - usually by pressing F10 repeatedly or F11 (<-most common way))

It's OEM alright, it's some weird make that she got sold in Compustore before they closed down!

Asus or something... I might just get her to find the box, I'm sure there's something in it to recover the OS.

Compustore closed down over a year ago as far as i knew but could have been one of the francises.

When you say won't boot, is it that it will go to the XP logo and restart or some bios text or just a few beeps and blank screen?

Got it sorted in the end.

The bootup screen had a message saying 'disk error hold CTRL, ALT and DEL to restart'

I got the recovery CD and just reinstalled XP home...
