A (possibly stupid) Mac HDD question?

I'm looking to get an external HDD to hook up to a PowerBook...can I just buy any IDE HDD and buy a Mac compatible (USB/FireWire) case and hook it up without problems?

Like I said, could be a stupid question but something I was told made me doubt myself.

    Cheers!

Almost certain that it will work perfectly over usb/firewire.

    Yes.
(Disk Control or something should allow you to format to suitable filesys (HFS+,etc)
