Boot-up Trouble

    Hi all,

Headed into college this morning, powered up the laptop and got a "missing operating system" message after about 30 seconds and a constant clicking noise from the hard disk.

I took it to the IT Dept, and they said it's likely to be a hard disk drive failure and to take it to a repair/service centre (at a cost of 100eur/hour i'm told!). However when I arrived home this evening, I ran "emovix" - a bootable linux based media player from CD-ROM and it successfully played music and video files from my hard disk... confusing or what!

If anyone can direct me to a program that can be booted from CD and will allow me to copy files to a external hard-disk, I'd really appreciate it. I'll not have access to my Windows CD until next week, but in the meantime I want to back-up as much as I can until then ASAP, in case the hard-drive is about to fail completly!

Anyone with similar experiences or explanations, comments welcome!

    Thanks in advance.

Knoppix or Ubuntu LiveCD -> Linux distro's that boot from CD..

After data is backed up - try SpinRite (Commercial/Paid for software..ahem).
