If you are playing or practising snooker or pool by yourself, what do you play?

If I'm trying to kill an hour or 2, I try the line up, but more often than not just mess the reds about and spot the colours and away I go....

...although generally breaking down on about 10 these days. :(

it really depends on what your looking to work on for example:

if your looking to pot / build confidence "the thin red line is your best bet"

if your looking for a variety of shots just throw the reds about the table and spot the colors and use any color ball to pot another ball, this helps build confidence and so forth

if your looking to work on your potting and tracking then "the red cross" is your best bet (this is the one i currently use when doing my 2 hour practice session each day) you set up the balls as follows
    ...............R...............
    ...............R...............
    ...............B...............
    ...............R...............
    ...............R...............
    ...............R...............
    .......R R R P R R R.......
    ...............R...............
    ...............R...............
    ...............R...............
    ...............B...............

The main idea here is to keep potting off the black and pink and only using the blue ball as a means to get back on track, its a bit tricky but it does improve your game and thought process a hell of alot

When i practice, its usually work on my short game rather than long potting. I find if your short game is above decent long potting will be a rare occasion. My usual technique is to play from bottom table and then try make it to final 27.
Main importance is not to play up and down table in my opinion and gain a sense of confident position as soon as possible.
When practiced all the potting, i think safety is as important. a lot of people over compensate on potting and offensive style gaming and when no balls are on, screw up and leave the frame for taking.
Finally practice cannoning, 95% of it is based on luck. but once u can take notice of any natural plants after the contact with cueball, u may be able to predict the spread of the pack. I mostly play snooker on my own, so my match gaming is rather poor, but my break building is quite high

i have to differ with you slightly there im afraid long potting and going up and down the table is just as important as tracking & short potting

even ronnie and co fall out of position and alot of the time going up and down the table or making a pot the length of the table is the only thing that will get you back in position

while im at it actually for those looking to improve their match play game they should sign up to RIBSA and enter the intermediate or senior tournaments it costs about €20 but ye get a cool snooker DVD thrown into the bargain. chances are you'll get beaten quite alot at the start but as yer match experience improves you should start going up the rankings slightly, best part of the tournaments is that when your unranked / low ranked you usually get drawn against a high seeded player which altough is a bit of a challenge it great experience
