Sorry for the long winded post, the first bit isnt too important.

I was trying to fix someones computer last night. They've never had any antivirus, spyware remover or firewall installed. The pc was fairly riddled with stuff as you can imagine.
I tried installing AVG, Spybot Cwshredder and Adaware. Only AVG could be "found" when installed. Whatever was on the PC was blocking Internet Explorer. I could get online with firefox though. With only 64MB of ram scans were taking ages but bottom line was I didnt get the malicous stuff removed.

So he rang PC World where he bought the PC and they told them they had been inundated with broken computers & phone calls and wouldnt be taking any more in until January. When he told the tech guy he had a "Trojan Horse" he was told that there's a very bad one going around which amongst other things:

    Hacks into your computer
Allows the hacker full access to your files.
Steals you credit card details (could be a key logger)
Able to turn off your computer but leave the webcam on so it can see in kids bedrooms.
They also use it to ask kids their age and address etc
Because they are stealing you bandwidth they can download your entire harddrive in 10 seconds!
He was told they only target people with broadband (he has Eircom Wireless)

Now the guy who told me wouldn't be the most computer literate but the above is some of the stuff PC World told him. They said it's causing businesses nightmares.

I know spyware/viruses can do variations of the above but surely the "download your entire hard drive in 10 seconds" thing is utter crap right? Especially for a home user.
It sounds like the PC World guy was telling him what Trojans can do, in general, rather than any specific one but going on what he told me he was told that there is a new deadly one out.

He was told to download a Microsoft tool ( possibly their AntiSpyware Beta, but he couldn't remember) to get rid of it as it could bypass all his firewalls.

I had a look on a few sites but could find any reports of any new major outbreak. Does anybody have any idea of what it could be or is the PC World guy just scaremongering?

He was told to reformat his HD btw.

You are right...that is complete and utter bull****....his broadband upload speed would mean it would take days/weeks to download his entire harddrive

That's about the best advice they gave him

What I don't understand is why someone in PC World, which Joe Bloggs computer user trusts, would tell him something like this?

Maybe their floorstaff work in the back room too :)

He has young children in the house so he was pretty freked out when he heard people could use webcams to spy on them. He was essentially told that paeodophiles use trojans! OK so they could potentially but they made it sound like there was a sicko sitting at a pc watching his kids.

I'd nearly ring up and complain if I new the exact contents of the phonecall.
