DVD Santa is a software that can do that for you I believe.

Here's what the website says: "Converts and Burns All Video Formats, such as DivX / XVid movies, AVI format videos, Mpeg movies, VCD/SVCD movies, WMV videos, Real videos, Quicktime videos DIRECTLY into DVDs so that you can watch them on your TV with your family and friends. "

As far as I can remember I think Nero converts mpg, avi to vcd format that can be viewed on dvd. Put a load of friends episodes on one disk.
There are also a few freebie convert tools and guides on http://www.videohelp.com/convert

DivxtoDVD is what I use - dont use the trial version - prints a link across the top of the whole movie - use the registered version. Its simple and effective and is as quick as your PC

On a P3 500Mhz it did 1.4 frames per second - 10 hours for a 40 minute episode of Lost

On an Athlon X2 2.2 clocked at 2.36 it did the same in 11 minutes. at 76 fps..
