because not all absinthe tastes the same maybe? and maybe other people might have different opinions on what tastes nice? i could be way off here..

no no i have had the chance to have a bash at a few bottles of the stuff and there is various tastes, different strengths and even different hangovers.

if you can't drink it get sugar cubes and pour your absinthe on a soup spoon or any other deep/big spoon and put the cube in it, cube soaks it up and then eat it. don't notice a taste at all but doesn't really get you drunk cause well it's only a bit of a sugarcube full but it's the handiest way to try it

Yeah, not all faeces tastes the same either, and by the amount of german schiezer videos out these some people may well have different opinions on taste. I have tasted about 5 different absinthes, all vile, I kept going back thinking, "jesus, one of them must taste ok", but no, I have never heard of anybody who actually likes it.

    that says it all really...
I also cannot understand people who pay for expensive tequila and have to use salt and lemon/lime to mask the vile taste while wincing as it goes down. I know there are a few tequila drinkers who do like the taste of particular brands but most go the lemon and salt way. Why do it? there are some beautiful liquers out there.

with the tequila it's more of a ritual in my opinion.

have you the same opinion about people that take jack daniels with coke or whatever else they might mix it with?

i don't mind people doing that but personally i have to drink it straight

This might be a stupid question but what makes a drink an absinthe. There are a load of different types of absinthe but what makes it one.

i think as a rule of thumb if its good wormwood in it its the better stuff, the stuff they sell here is crap, spent(foolishly) 70 dollars on some in mexico and it's rocketful compared to some i've tried, its all very different

Proper absinthe is well worth trying, I think. You won't get in this country.

    It's an interesting experience.

over the summer boomerangs were selling it at like 7.50 a shot...most expensive and messy night in a long time

The absinthe sold on lafeeabsinthe.com (interestingly it used to be called eabsinthe.com but obviously another company bought the domain after it's name change) is the proper stuff, both the French and Czech varieties. I've drunk many types and it's definitely my favourite. The worst I have drunk were absinthe original and absinth sebor (both czech) but mari mayan from Ibiza isn't bad. A real absinthe HAS to have wormwood as it's base, as it's the thujone from the wormwood that makes it potent, not just the alcohol content. Pernod and Ricard were originally absinthe until it was outlawed in France, so the makers simply left out the wormwood so that it would be classified a pastis. It's possible to buy pernod 68 on the net, which is the original pernod absinthe recipe but I've never tried it.

No I didn't miss it at all, I replied directly to it. Some people think faeces tastes nice, most (I hope!) do not. I have never met a person who likes absinthe or tequila, I am sure there are some out there.

If somebody bought a jack & coke and was then wincing as they drank it due them thinking it tasted horrible or had a terrible sensation, then yes, I would have the same lack of understanding as to why they would pay above the odds for a drink they clearly do not enjoy.

I am really just warning curious people not to fork out a large amount of money on a drink that most people I know find repulsive, try a shot in a pub first. It seems to have a mythological side to it, so does tequila to some degree (tripping on worms and "different" highs) and poitin (the whole cyrstals in your stomach crap, getting pissed the next day on water). Most absinthes have such low levels of thujone that you would be getting your stomach pumped before you even had minimal effects. If you want a drink that gives and extra high and doesnt taste too bad then try some green dragon.

fair enough point i suppose, well said

rubadub - are you mixing the absinthe with water? Neat would indeed be an upleasant experience. Mixed with water it should go from a clear green to a cloudy white.

My favourite by far would be Mari Mayans, which is Spanish, from Ibiza. In fact most of the others I have not liked at all, and there is certainly some seriously atrocious stuff put out to cash in on the trend. I have tried about 10-15, mainly from Spain and the Czech Republic. The Czech stuff seems to be drunk neat and doesn't go cloudy when mixed with water.

I do like Pernod/Ricard also, which is basically the same stuff but weaker and without the wormwood; pastis is the most popular spirit in France so an entire country can't very well be wrong.

Those prices on eabsinthe are criminal, even before the delivery. Fly to Girona or Reus with Ryanair (Absinthe is more popular in the north, and Tarragona (from Reus) and Girona are cheap to get to and well worth a visit) and get it in the duty free (Aldeasa, the Spanish duty free, is almost always cheaper for spirits than the Spanish supermarkets, approx 1/3 of the Irish price for a bottle of spirits.)

I've tried Black Absinthe from some place I can't remember... came in a little bottle and it tasted like liquorice...

Mixed it with water and it was nice. There was someone drinking it with blackcurrant which I'd imagine tasted quite odd...

Yeah, tried with water, hot water, sugar, various mixers. Ended up even worse! instead of a shot I had a full glass of stuff I didnt like. We ended up chasing it down, take a quick shot and wash it down with 7-up straight after to rinse the taste out.

    This is the Beer/Wine/Spirits Board.

This is not the Spoonful of Medicine Board.

I've yet to see anything redeeming about absinthe.

I think the lure of absinthe comes from the fact that it was a very popular drink in the late 19th century and as a lot of famous writers mentioned it in their works, it's now somewhat infamous.

I've tried it and enjoyed the unusual flavour.

Why do I order really hot Vindaloos that burn the mouth off me? And moan and sweat and pant while I eat it?

Wouldnt blame ya, isnt that 90%

My experience of absinthe, gets a young inexperienced drinker like me v drunk. Its a different kind of drunk though, all i remember is the room spinning when i was sitting/lying down. However, i guess this represents more the binge drinking side to it than the enjoyment side to it.

Was in Prague a couple of weeks ago and had a few shots of Absinthe. Powerful stuff. Should have brought home some- only around €8 a bottle I think. Brought home Cannabis vodka. There are loads of Cannabis seeds in the bottom of the bottle.

If you're thinking of ordering absinthe over the web, I can heartily recommend the guys at www.spiritscorner.com.

Based in Barcelona, and much cheaper than the prices that eabsinthe are charging.

For example, Mari Mayans 70% (Spanish) is UK £28.50 at eabsinthe, but only €18 from the SpiritsCorner guys.

Shipping will add to the cost, but if you order three or more bottles, the savings will start to kick in.
