Just installed Avast Anti-virus after my norton trial expired. When I set the real-time protection to high my CPU usage goes to 100%. The pc slows down to a crawl. Looking at the MSI system status app. it told me my cpu was at 3.8Ghz... this "overclock" was due to an increase in the multiplier?? CPU-z said the cpu was still at 1.988 Ghz. What would cause this - also why does the real time protection use up so much resources as to render the pc useless. Spec in 1st rig in sig.

Ensure that all of NAV was removed (Use the tool provided on the Symantec website) as it may be scanning at the same time..

Is there anything noted in Event Viewer? (Try to save time..)

    Disconnect from (Inter)Networks.
Test in Safe Mode - does it happen here (It shouldn't:) But just to rule out other issues that might be causing it)
    Back in Normal mode
    Disable startup items (MSCONFIG -6):
    1. Disable everything except Avast.
    See if it happens.

    2. Start re-enabling items 2/3 at a time.
See if it happens. Narrow down what's causing it.

Have you a direct link to that NAV removal tool please, I can't find it on the Symantec site.
