can you read/write to the iPod through My Computer (i.e. As a mass storage device)?

try reformatting with whatever Windows updater is available - sorry can't help you further, this is a Mac forum. I use a thing called "iPod Software Updater", there's proabably a Windows version. But the fact that it's coming up as a mass storage device is probably a Good Thing.
