Right, I've been looking for ages and I still have no confidence in my own knowledge soooo.... I'm looking for a laptop that's around €1000 (might be able to spend more...perhaps up to about €1200). I wouldn't really need it for gaming but I'd like to be able to play fairly recent games. I'd use it more for web-design/browsing, typing, listening to music, dvds, image editing (paint shop pro) and a little movie editing (nothing huge). 14/15" screen is perfect and NOT widescreen, if possible (Why are so many laptops widescreen now?). Um, 512mb ram minimum. Now, I don't totally understand processors. I've gathered that Centrinos > Celerons but I've no idea how much better a 1.7 would be than a 1.4... so yeah, don't know about the processor, it doesn't even have to be Intel. 40gb minimum, more would be nice but not essential. Wireless is also required. I'm assuming DVD re-writers are almost standard now so that too. So yeah, summary:

    Processor: Unsure.
    Memory: 512mb minimum.
    Screen: 14/15" not widescreen preferrably.
Harddrive: 40GB minimum (a little more would be nice :D)
Built in wireless, and alright graphics card.

    Any ideas? Thanks a million!

You'll be struggling for that price, the Dell inspiron 6000 nearly matches requirement, except its widescreen..

Are you serious? Dammit, thought it would've been easy enough to find a suitable one. Aside from the annoying resolution, are there any other drawbacks to widescreens?

    they make the laptop wider?

my brother has got one of them inspiron 9300 with a 17" widescreen and man is it massive. so big in fact that he's having trouble sourcing a backpack to carry it in.

Yeah, I suppose. The laptop being wider wouldn't bother me too much, I just thought the bigger the monitor, the more expensive.
