    Cantona Hails Reds Legend Best

Eric Cantona has paid tribute to the late George Best who passed away last Friday.

The Frenchman contacted ManUtd.com in order to express his personal thoughts on the United legend.

Cantona said: "After his first training session in heaven, George Best, from his favourite right wing, turned the head of God who was filling in at left-back.

"I would love him to save me a place in his team, George Best that is, not God."

    Report by Gemma Thompson.

good for you, but i'm sure plenty of other people have that nice fuzzy warm image of best in their head. personally i think the praise has been alot lobsided.

if best himself would have wanted a picture of his state taking before he died, then why the hell would he have wanted all this coverage and praise to be overshadowing the major issues that ended up ending his life.

Hey, instead of posting those kind of comments in a thread about a tribute to a footballer, why don't you just change your nickname to 'Ignorant Asshole' or something, and save us all the time of having to read your posts to discover that that's what you are.

George Best was a terrific footballer. He also suffered from a disease called alcoholism. There's a time and a place for debating how he lived his private life, and this is neither. Nor do you or I, or anyone else on this forum, know anything approaching enough to begin to do so in an objective way.

This is a soccer forum - we're paying tribute to a great soccer player.
Take your opinions of the man elsewhere as no one here wants to hear or share in them.

yeah he did! so pay tribute to that and recognise how he would have liked to have been remembered, when he was dieing, he wanted to be used as a warning of what can happen to a person, and doing that is what i'll be remembering him best for. thats what i feel is being overshadowed too much

Did you people not start a thread in AH about George Best and what an evil tyrant he was, on the scale of hitler if I remember ( stopped reading it after the first few posts) with a request in the title about it no football related posts. Well seeing as this iis the football forum, most people with more than the single brain cell bouncign around inside their head realsie that it should be kept football related. Even if they stumble through that roadblock, then the nature of the posts on the thread should be an indicator that its being kept football related. So why don't you toddle on back over to AH with these sort of posts.

This thread is about paying homage to a great footballer and hasn't really got anything to do with his private life so can we start taslking about football again?

This is a football forum, and last week the world of football lost a great legend. If you can't show a single iota of respect then go back to After Hours instead of trolling here.
    Great quote from Cantona.

i think everything has already been said on how great a player he was. the whole situation would be similar to a player with the stature of ronaldinho quitting football next year. and ronaldinho never had to play on the type of pitches george best was scoring 4 goals on :)

I can't understand how NekkidBibleMan has been banned for a week and el rabitos hasn't been banned yet. He is clearly trolling.

On Cantona's comments... Well, what more would you expect?! The man is a legend. Well put Eric. I'm sure Georgie would have loved that tribute.

No, Its the one legend pays tribute to another Legend thread . Half a million people are expected to turn out to pay their respects at Besties. The largest gathering the North will have ever seen and a fitting tribute to a great footballer from fans of all persussion.

Yes He had his problems but who doesn't?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,399 ✭✭✭✭Thanx 4 The Fish

It's quite easy really PORN, rabitos is not in breach of the charter, he has not resorted to namecalling regardless of the amount of goading he has gotten. George Best is dead, he was a great football player, he was an alcoholic and a wife beater. I think that was the extent of the remarks, none of those are incorrect or malign the man himself, just because you do not agree with them does not mean that he should be banned for them.

If this was only a forum for discussing what happened on the pitch Monster then I would be off around banning people for posting re any rape allegations or any other stuff that goes on, the rules do not suddenly change because it is somebody you respect who has died.

heard on the radio earlier that the funeral is going to be the biggest ever held in ireland. Anyone know if this is true? it would be a fitting tribute to the man along with the one from cantona. Also united fans are all being given posters of best to hold up at tonights west brom cup game.

    UNITED PREPARE FOR BEST TRIBUTE
Posters of George Best will be handed
out at Old Trafford tonight as
Manchester United fans are given their
chance to honour the legendary winger.

Supporters will be asked to raise the
    portraits aloft during an emotional
minute's silence prior to the Carling
    Cup tie with West Brom.

    Best's 1968 European Cup final-winning
team-mates have been invited to the
game, along with members of the West
Brom side against whom the Belfast-born
star made his debut in 1963.

Best's son Calum will also be at the
    game.
