    *pre-empt..*

    Try OpenOffice Impress? (it's free)

Of course, you are free to use your old Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, or save your work in PowerPoint format for sending to people who are still locked into Microsoft products. Alternatively, use IMPRESS's built-in ability to create Flash (.swf) versions of your presentations.

try ebay too for older copies if you really need M$office

but OO will edit powerpoint docs.

Don't forget you can only use educational version if you are a full time student for the duration of the course. Check with your school/college as M$ have probably spammed them already.

It's not for me. I'm already using openoffice :) But not version 2 yet. Is it better for powerpoint because 1.whatever was pretty crap. I didn't like the interface and effects were certainly different.

I think it'll be used maily for printing out and looking at lecture notes.

I hadn't thought of asking the college Capt. Good idea!

Calc changed a lot through version 1 , so I'm sure Impress did too - if not using a recent version then upgrade, loads of little niggles getting fixed all the time.

But like Karoma says if just printing/viewing then use the free viewer.

Or get PdfCreator and dump all the PowerPoint presentations to PDF's and use Foxit reader.

I remember finding Impress in an early OO version rather flakey, and unfriendly.. I'm downloading the latest OO version for evalution now..

Right. Without the JRE bundles - it comes in under 80MB (Mirrored on HeaNet)..only took a few min's to download.

Right - the U.I. rocks. It's simple to create a presentation (Better than my experiences with PowerPoint).

Con: The transitional FX (Vertical Venetian Blind, Fast) seem to bork my (faulty) old laptop video card (twice, I tried..).

A work colleague of mine mentioned PC World selling it for 150 Eurons.

aye. PC World (Limerick) had it for sale; as well as PowerPoint on it's own.. I have no idea of prices though.

Thought you could only get office academic and not the bits, then again Works + Upgrade to Office Standard has usually been cheaper than Excel on it's own

Sorry, what I meant was Academic Office, or (Standard) PowerPoint on it's own.
I'm not sure of prices (As it never occurred to me to pay for this P.O.C.), so I have no idea which would make more economical sense..

    Anyhow: microaid.ie should have it..

ED: Right. I'll have to advise against Open Office's Impress, if you you have an ATI card.
It's crashed another machine that I've tested (Much higher spec. , better working condition..)
I'll toddle off to IssueZilla ..but for now.. avoid it :(
it seems to be a common issue-OO think they're getting somewhere..but need ATI help..which doesn't appear to be forthcoming..bah.
