    Hi,

I'm running XP Pro and up to now it did as asked, last week the pages started to "Hang" by Friday it wouldn't any programs, the Icons were all there but no repnse even the Tak manager started to hang.

I tried to back up what I could but it refused to write the CD discs, there is a lot of info in that beast so after trying to recover it by writing over windows it knew the files were waiting to be written to the CD but refused to do so.

When trying Safe Mode everything was still there some would even open but no internet access to run a scan.

Today my AVG Pro 7 (the one you buy) is in a different language with no files opening.

I just ran chkdsk /r and the message is the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems.

Have all my files been lost or can I recover them ? the computer can go out off the balcony my car has been moved now.

    Hi,

I received this e-mail from Rooferpete, as he is having some computer trouble, and hopefully you might be able to sort him out.

    Hi Ladies and Gents,

A major nuisance problem, I noticed my computer was acting strange so as a last minute attempt to save important data I was trying to save what I could to CD but it refused to write to the CD.

Tried Microsoft Support who left the machine running on chkdsk /r for over 12 hours, during the next day I tried to reboot and found the CD allowed the program to repair the program.

A bit frighening but I allowed it to re-load Win XP Pro, I now have the screen back with all the icons but none work, I have restarted in Safe Mode and all the files appear to be on the hard drive, for example "My Documents" has 2.4 gb of info and files.

While running all the Pre reinstall tests I got the following info :

    \windows\system32\config\system

    isass.exe operation failed

    \windows\system32\config\system.SAV

    <Windows Root>\system32\HAL.dll

All of the above showed up at different times before the reinstall, now I am back where I started except tomorrow in Monday and I will need some of the trapped files.

    Any and all help appreciated.

depending on your type of internet connection, safe mode with network may allow you to connect to the internet.

borrow a usb hard drive to copy files on to ( don't forget to virus scan it afterwards )

try firefox or www.opera.com if IE can't be used - they are 6 MB so will fit on the smallest USB key.

    Hi,

Thanks for help Guys, the hard drive was gone awol or rather parts of it, I am working on a smaller drive for now, thankfully everything except three photos were saved.

Definatley a job for the expert, I will have a new drive and an external USB drive to transfer from the home office to the official one without repeating data.

By the way, Thank You Ste for calling out at short notice, I doubt there are many in that business who arrive fully equipped for the job at 10.30 pm ;)
