    Hi

I bought myself a darts board with surround cabinet for 35 euro in homebase .
Going to set it up in my bedroom .

Could anybody tell me the correct distance i should be from the board when throwing darts and also the height i should have it on the wall

I have played darts in pubs etc but never actually thought of the distance needed to be away from the board to ensure i am playing legally within the rules .

So how far do i need to be away and how high should i put it on the wall

    cheers

    Hi Andrew,

This all depends on your particular style nut the most important bit of advise I could give you is to make sure that you use a Tungsten Dart and not a brass dart. The darts you got with the board are more than likely made of brass and these tend to be of a bigger barrell and lighter than the tungsten darts. Tungsten is a heavy metal so allows you to have a slim barrell but a heavy enough dart. Obviously with a slim barrell it will allow you to fit three darts into the treble twenty alot easier than using brass darts.

I personally use a 24g dart which is maybe a little heavier than normal but thats my preference as I tend to throw the dart harder than most. The average would be a 21-22 gram dart but it really is a matter of preference and how hard you throw the dart. If you are only starting out playing I would go for the 22 gram as its in between both and will give you the best of both worlds.

As for make I would recommend a unicorn dart as I feel they are the best quality. They tend to cost a little bit more than average but you should be able to get a decent set for about the €30 mark but then again you can get a lot more expensive ones.

Other things that you may want to consider is the length of the shaft. they can come in lots of different lengths again which one you choose depends on your personal preference. These will only cost €1 for three so you can buy a few different lengths and experiment with them. The same goes for flights which come in many different shapes so again just try them out as these are very cheap as well.

Hope thats a help to you and more help just ask. Oh and by the way if you havent already voted would you click on the link in my sig and vote for a Darts forum as im sure you would like to see one set up :D

    Hi

Thanks a lot for the good advice . I had a passing interest in Darts but decided to try now and make a decent effort at playing it

As for hanging it in my bedroom ,would the previous posting be the best to follow regarding height from floor , distance to position myself away from the board
I just dont want to hang it up and not be correct, rather get it properly alligned starting off

Sorry for another question..where would the best shop to buy the darts you recommend,i have seen some in sports shops but dont know if they are good darts
I will take you advice and buy the brand you mention .

I appreciate you help ,many thanks

P.s i have voted for a darts forum ,good idea

Yes the previous post about distance from the board is spot on.

The height from the floor to the BULLSEYE is 5 foot 8 inches.
The distance from the front of the board to the oche is 7 foot 9.25 inches.

You should be able to get unicorn Darts in most good sports shops as they would be one of the more popular brands. I would very surprised if a store that sold darts didnt supply unicorn darts. If for some reason they dont there are numerous websites that will sell unicorn darts just do a quick google search.

Winmau darts are pretty good too. The most important thing, as King said, is to make sure the darts are tungsten.

It isnt all that easy to buy darts in sports shops in Dublin in my experience. A lot of them have the equipment locked up in cabinets with no prices displayed. So you need to ask for assistance. Argos has a relatively decent supply of darts stuff.

The martial arts shop on the corner of Capel St has a good selection of darts, all displayed openly, with prices and decently priced. Also the staff seem to know what they're on about if you need advice regarding the darts.

Yeah that is the only annoying thing about trying to buy flights etc in sports shops. My local pub sells flights and shafts so I usually get them there.

There was a darts shop a bit further up Capel Street, just past Bamba books. I don't know if they are still there but they had a dart board set up and you could try out darts before you purchased. They sold second hand darts as well, so you could try a set to see if they suited and if they didn't then you could sell them back and try some more.
Hopefully it is still there. I have just got back into playing after a few years. I got the board with cabinet and a set of tungsens in Argos, good price and handy, its a bit of an effort for me to get into town now.
It is not as easy to set the board to the right height with a cabinet but it is worth the effort spending time at it and making sure you get it as close as possible.

I don't remember the name, I have had a quick search through the golden pages and I can't find anything that might be it in Capel Street. It may have closed.

I think it co-exists with a pool and snooker place as well.

Just one point that was covered on the selection of darts, is that I found that the length of the stems in relation to your height has quite a bearing on your flight plane of the your darts.

For example, I'm quite short at 5' 8'' , and if I throw a tall dart, often what happens is that the point of the dart hits the baord above the height of the flights ....i.e the dart is sorta pointing upward.

Therefore for me, a shorter suits me far better, as I can get a proper flight plane.

P.S Haven't played darts in about 6 years since I got married ... but used to play a bit ... the 'practising' got in the way though;)
