Firefox User profiles

I just got a new computer and as I didn't want to go to the bother of refinding all my extensions and bookmarks for firefox I copied the Mozilla folder from the Application Data on my old PC. When I'd set up the new one I pasted the folder in the appropriate place, however on starting up firefox I keep being told that the profile I want to use cannot be used as it's already in use. Can anyone explain this problem? (I'm using XP pro)

    Thank you

I'm guessing both profile names end with .default.

Don't copy the entire profile folder, copy the contents (bookmarks, etc) to the new profile folder. Either that, or delete the new profile folder.

I overwrote the new folder with the old folder and the profile i want to use is called default, I had create a new one (default user) to use FF at all.

On Linux there's a empty file called 'lock' in the profile folder when that profile is in use. If it exists and you're not using that profile, delete it.

I can't find any file called "lock" in the profile folder, thanks though.

I created a new profile and pasted the contents of my old profile into the new profile folder, when I try to start up this one it doesn't tell me that it's in use but once the user profile box disappears nothing happens and I have to kill the firefox.exe process to open firefox again. When I burned the folder to the CD the burner program changed all the file names to higher case and replaced spaces with underscores, could this be causing the problem?

yep that would cause a problem, burn the cd with joliet standard instead of iso, then create a new profile (start->run->firefox -p->create) and paste the contents of your old profile into the new one

Thanks, I'll try that, good thing I hadn't formatted the old PC yet (it's getting a new home and needs a clean install)
