Heres one for all you spiky philosphers to mull over...

The Corrs cover of Phil Lynotts "Old Town" was a really punk thing to do.
    Discuss.

When Lynott was alive and Lizzy together, they were never really rated all that highly in Ireland. In fact, some people remarked on how little interest Lynott himself attracted in his home town of Dublin. Lizzy never really made it all that big, and faded quickly, particularly when the U2 train started to roll.

However, since his untimely and tragic death, history has been rewritten, revisionism abounds and Lynott has been elevated onto a pedestal. Theres the annual vibe for Philo, the statue and a general inflation of the mans work and talents.

It was inevitable that the Corrs, covering that song, would attract some flak. Its more of violating a sacred cow nature though, than fair criticism. More how dare they ! instead of an objective view.

So - Irish punks of the year 2005 - The Corrs.

They first released a recording of it in 1999 on their Unplugged album, so maybe they're the punks of the 20th Century? :v:

I don't remember Thin Lizzy being as obscure as you say when I was growing up and, certainly in my memory, Old Town was pretty huge when originally released. The video was on the telly a lot back then (before we were really aware of MTV)too. It's not like the song rose out of obscurity after Phil's death. Smiley has been running the vibes for an awful long time too.

As for the Corrs being punk by covering it... if you're going to cover a really, really classic song make sure you don't **** it up. In my opinion, they didn't get close to the feel, the spirit or the quality of the original. Their version is, like a lot of their music, fairly bland, middle of the road fare... just... very... meh.

    That's not punk. That's Louis Walsh :v:
