I know it varies from department to department (the department in question is Spanish) but are they taken extrmely seriously? could it affect my chances of getting picked to go away to Spain on SOCRATES next year?

They pick the students who get on best with the lecturers imo.

Don't all language students have to spend a year abroad as part of their course? So they wouldn't be able to stop you even if you got a load of NS?

The best thing to do is send an email to the lecturer(s) whose course you got the NS from and if there was a reason why you weren't attending class/handing in work, explain it to them and say it won't happen again. If not, then just say you're sorry about it and you're going to work to make sure it doesn't happen again. They don't even have to acknowledge it but just so they know you're not pissing your degree away in the Buttery or something and you're going to work.

And then put in the work to make sure that it doesn't happen again. It's not really a big deal afaik, more a warning than anything else

sounds like a plan, was gonna do that via my tutor, tell her that i'm having trouble settling in and with my timetable, etc (which actually wouldn't be a lie) and see if she will pass it on for me (i'm not expecting it to be cancelled or anything)..........
i'll definitely put in more work next term although i've handed up nearly all the homework.

It varies from dept to dept but it is serious - in some depts a student with an NS has to repeat the year because they're not allowed to graduate with the subject they were NS 'd in.

Not to panic you or anything as that sanction is (as far as I know) rarely applied. But don't ignore it - go talk to your tutor and find out what the dept policy is.

Are you in European Studies? I'm in the Science faculty so it may be different, but if we don't attend enough tutorials without a medical certificate etc we won't be allowed into second year.
Speaking of medical certificates, how do I get one? Cos I missed a couple of labs this week due to illness, but I wasn't in college, I was at home. By the time Monday comes round and I'm back in I'll probably be better, so will I still be able to get the cert?

  • It depends. Spanish (TSM) are really funny about Socrates, basically they don't want people to go abroad and look for any excuse to stop you. Why did you get the NS? They don't like it when people don't bother attending classes, and can be funny about it. Likewise they made someone repeat a whole year for not handing in work (she had a while pile of NS though and she NEVER went to college). It really depends. I know people who got away with loads, but if you want to go abroad you are better off being careful. You basically need their permission to go so it's in their hands. Ridiculous but that's how it is.

Don't wanna sound like a nag but you really should attend the classes and do the work to keep on top of everything. The Spanish exams have a habit of biting people in the arse, I know a LOT of people who failed in first year because they didn't know how high the standard was. It's not really a difficult subject but it's deceptive because you need to do a bit of work. It's almost always the people who are all 'sure Spanish is dead easy' who fail and the nervous beginners who panic and study, who pass :)

Contact your tutor - there was a previous policy about self-certification in Science if my memory is correct, in that your tutor could sign off on you missing a lab. If your tutor has been around the block, s/he should know about it. Ask! If you've forgotten who it is, email me [education@tcdsu.org] or PM me.

Otherwise, drop into your local GP, or into the college doc to obtain a med cert.

As for any NS, I'd be quite wary about them. If they add up, you can be denied from doing your annual exams. Also, and this is stated quite clear in the rules: "attendence in Junior Freshman is compulsary". Before you get too deeply into the number of NS's, I'd (again) contact your tutor. When the end of year exams come about, something that is often said is that "I didn't know..." - but it's easier to fix things in the beginning, then at the end.

    D.

[edit] Most of what I just said was contained in previous posts. Meh.[/edit]

my god i really just can't understand the Spanish deparment! they're so strange! how am i meant to learn to speak spanish if i can't spend time in the bloody country! the mind boggles!

  • Yeah its bloody ridiculous. The head of dept thinks it's a good idea to take a 'year out', to Latin America, which is all well and good but most people can't afford a year off! Who does he think is going to pay for it? You save money by doing Erasmus as rent and living is a lot cheaper in Spain than in Dublin. Not to mention taking a year out makes the crappy Arts degree FIVE YEARS long! He needs to come back to the real world. I think its disgraceful that a LANGUAGE faculty puts people off going on Erasmus, or forces them to go in 2nd year which in my opinion is too early, especially for beginners.
