I had that problem with a gig of ram i had (2x512Mb)

it just showed up as 512... Take the ram out and boot it up with just one stick in, start over with the other stick, if there's no problems put them both in and reboot.

Can you put it in someone elses system?
Maybe you got ripped off (or mistake was made) and its only 512?
dunno if different speed mem modules have adverse effects on each other!

Try checking for a bios update. I had trouble with this kind of craic with my own mobo. Updated the bios, bingo bango, no more problems. :D

Be aware that bios upgrade attempts may fry your motherboard.

Your motherboard may not support a single 1G DIMM, check the manual. Also, as Khannie says, a BIOS update might solve that problem too.
ill be getting an opteron system in december/january and was wondering what i would overclock my current piece of **** too as practice
I don't understand why people buy brand new, top of the range systems, and then over clock it. Unless you have a pressing need for more GHz, overclocking won't really make any noticable difference, and will only reduce the life span of the components.

You could overclock your old system to see if it improves. I have a Slot-A Athlon 600 at home that's running at around 750MHz. Gives a bit more poke to an old system (until it overheated because the cooler fans stopped working) but I wouldn't see the point in stepping up my 1.8GHz Athlon 64 to 2GHz.
