Pick up for my new McIlroy A35c

    Hi all

Its almost time for me to choose a pick-up for my McIlroy A35c being built at the moment. Initially I had thought the new Fishman Prefix Premium Blend, as I get the onboard pre-amp and the tuner etc..... I then asked John at shoreline and he recommended the PUTW #54 or the Sunrise.

Thing is I play anything from soft fingerstyle to hard strumming like Nirvana or something!! I play a Taylor 614 at the moment, but am not sure what the Pick-up on it is (It isn't my Taylor!"!!)! Our sound system is only OK and the external pre-amp I use isn't great. I also can't control volume or tone at the moment on the Taylor. Thats why I thought the Fishman would have everything and I could control it rather than relying on my partner in our duo to do so....he plays Piano and has a shocking tendency to turn my volume down WAY too low!!
So, what do you lads think?

Thanks for the advice all :D

I've heard great things about the Fishman Rare Earth Blend pickup system. Features a pickup mounted across the soundhole and also a small condenser mic just under the body of the guitar. You can blend both sounds to achieve a really nice acoustic sound. They sound great but are a bit expensive. Depends what your budget allows really. Then again those guys at shoreline will know their stuff, they get some of the nicest acoustic guitars in the world through their hands so I'm sure they know a fair bit about acoustic pickups

Do you know anything about the Pick up the World or the Sunrise? Can I control the volume with those? I must look into that Fishman one... never mind the money...with the amount I've spent on the guitar itself, I don't want to put in a crap pickup!!!

The only pickup I'd put in that amazing acoustic you have is a K&K trinity system one. Definately with no onboards preamp either. Thats my say on it. Its the most natural sounding pickup I've ever heard and its pretty much the only one I'd choose.

    Custom,

Thanks for that. They certainly look interesting, but I can't guage from their description whether I have volume control or not on the guitar, and not just on the desk. Do you know if I can control the volume with K & K on the guitar?

You can get a belt clip K&K preamp which will have a volume control and all that. Seriously, I wouldnt sully your guitar with anything less than the K&K trinity system. There are some other great pickups out there too. Pleas avoid an undersaddle transducer, it would suck the life out of the McIlroy; well in my opinion. Good luck.

I'd be more likely to go with the opinion of Shoreline or McIlroy himself. If they recommend a good pickup you can bet it will be stunning with your guitar. They seem to deal a lot with McIlroys and all guitars are different so pickups will output sound different in different guitars. Also most people wont have been able to A/B various good acoustic pickups but I'd say shoreline have including what could be some fantastic pickups but which not many people are aware of such as sunrise or the PUTW
