Has anyone experienced this knee problem?

    Hey all..

Just wondering has anyone experienced this kind of knee problem?
Anytime I play sport or go running etc, I get this sharp ache at the bottom of my kneecap and slightly to the right as I look down at it.

I can stretch the exact painful spot by doing the old exercise of putting a two litre bottle under my leg and straightening it, pointing my toes back towards me.

When it kicks up, it takes a day to calm down, meaning using the clutch in the car is awful, walking up or down stairs etc. I went running tonight so Im pretty sure tomorrow I wouldnt be able to break into a jog even.

Even spending any extended time in a sitting position drives the ache crazy. I spent 3 hours on a plane last week, and just sitting there was really really painful.

I think its physio or consultant time. If I press under the bottom of my kneecap, I can feel the pain really sharply, or if I flex my quad muscle with the bottle underneath, it hits the spot too... and I usually end up in bad pain for a sec.

The only way to stop the pain is to stand up and lock my leg straight.

Does this sound familiar to anyone??

    Hey,

Im not a doctor but that sounds similar to what i had/kinda still have...
Osgood schlatters disease, not sure of spelling.
Its maybe not what you have but the symptoms sound familiar. Apparently a lot of teenagers get it when growing up due to high level of activity which stresses the knee muscles...i was given an anti inflammatory to help it. Usually i would play a soccer match and would be in pain the whole week. Actually the bone in my left knee is slightly pushed out as a result.

Anyhow thats what i was told by the doc, maybe not the same but it might give you a clue.

Have a look at the adjacent thread 'Patellar Tendinitis' (S.Keegan). It sounds similar.

    And stop exercising, rest it!

hi i just saw your thread and wondered have you got it long. My daughter whos 10 has just been diagnosed with it. She has to rest her knee for 8 weeks. Like you she has part of her tibula coming through her kneecap . Was surgery ever suggested?

Yeah Osgoods is where the Tibia pulls on the patellar tendon producing the "lump"

    what age are you OP??

    Definitely get it checked out!!

Sounds like Osgoods (more so depending on age) or Patellar Tendonitis (Jumpers knee) as mentioned!!

Heh :) I started this thread in 2005! After knee surgery and visits to 3 surgeons, it was finally decided that I had a problem with my Q Angle.

I started doing plenty of running and less twisting and turning sports and eventally it calmed down. I still get a touch of it every so often though.

    Haha wtf... what a bump.

Alie, I had Osgood Schlatters as a child and was advised that it would correct itself. It subsequently did and I'm all good now. That's not to say it will self correct in all cases.

Hmm, I once had my cartilage or whatever pop out of my knees. Seriously they would sorta swell at the head and looks moderatly terrifying lol.

Saw a doctor, who said I would be tall (was a midget then lol) and that I should expect this. Im now 6'3" so he was right about one part anyway. That could be the prob.

I found that taking a hot bath was good. They eased all discomfort and the cartilage obviously thought it was nicer in its home ^_^

That was a couple of years ago now (prob 3-4), the probs gone away and hasnt......surfaced again.

Interesting. I had Osgoods when I was 12 (now 20) a lump start developing along with extreme pain. Got an x ray and could see little pieces of bone in the bump. I had to stop playing any sport for 6 months. Over this time the pieces of bone must have fused to the top of the tibia and I have had a lump of extra bone at the bottom of my knee ever since. It doesn't cause any discomfort and I have no problem playing sports or anything.

I have that too - it all seems fine until you do Maui Thai and someone kicks you right on that spot!

OP, I had a similar problem with my knee a couple of years ago. The problem was just below the knee cap, it got so bad that I could barely walk sometimes and when driving for any length of time I would be in a fair bit of pain. There was also swelling or puffiness around the area and if the area was pressed on either side of the knee or directly below the knee cap it was very painful. Went to a specialist in the UK at the time and he told me it was tendonitis and sent me for a few months of physio. The main problem he told me at the time was that it was because I didnt stretch the muscles of my legs enough. So I was set a program of stretching my quads, hamstrings and thighs twice a day, I was also advised to the use the cross trainer in the gym and to go backwards. This did help but when I moved back to Ireland it came back and I ended up having to have keyhole surgery on my knee to clear out some little bits of bone, also have a enlarged cartlidge in my knee didn't help. My advice would be do plenty of stretching and do more none impact exercises such as the crosstrainer and deffinately go see a knee specialist to make sure you get the right treatment.
