    98 Accord.

    1st gear - accelerate - no problems
2nd gear - accelerate - revs seem high in relation to rate of acceleration
3rd gear - accelerate - revs up to 5/6k, lag as speed catches up with revs
4th/5th gear as above but more pronounced.

Is this the clutch slipping or something else ?

    Thanks for any advice.

Surefire sign your clutch is knackered is if you put the boot down in fourth and the revs jump high and reduce as the speed starts to increase.

    Time for a new clutch!

    Thanks for the quick replies.

Next questions, anyone got a ballpark on what a new clutch costs and any reccomendations on where to get it done.

FWIW I got the clutch done on my 98 Civic a few years ago in a main dealer and it cost me €480. I reckon off a non-dealer mechanic you could get it done for about €300-€350.

Don't know of a good mechanic though.

Yah its on it's way out pretty soon.

How ever if you would like to make sure, follow follow my 3 simple steps.

    1) Step into the mentioned vehicle and turn on the engine.

    2) Put it into 1st gear and rev it to , say , 5000rpm.

    3) Drop that damn clutch, and if the wheels-a-spinnin , youre-a-grinnin!
[if not , you need a new clutch, simple]

Always a nightmare when this happens! :(

Personally, I'd say you need a new clutch plate. But you might be lucky, it could just be a faulty pressure plate or weak diaphram spring.

It's a nightmare job to do yourself! Because it's so hard to remove the clutch and it's components, it might be a good idea to renew all friction disk, pressure plate assembly, and release bearing even if only one of these is faulty!

    Its not such a nightmare.
I got my clutch replaced for 150Euro - thats right!!!
the guy came up to my house at 9am while i took the bus to college and when i came back at 1pm the car was done, ready to drive and the guy was gone. Sound Sound guy.

He says he charges 150 for every car he does.

Cant remebmber his nr. but it was some bosnian or romanian guy.

Your clutch is definately gone by the sounds of it. I'd suggest buy your own clutch and get it fitted by a mechanic u know. does save you money.

My old man's 92 corollas clutch was knackered for about 6 months.
Jap import so he had to wait a few weeks to get a replacment.

He joked it was like driving an automatic :)

When he replaced the clutch he found he got alot more milage out of a tank of diesel!
