I would be very grateful if someone could advise me on the purchase of a new wide angle lens for my EOS 20D, I am new to this level of photography and I aready have a 17mm to 85mm lens but I am taking photographs for a local paper and also have taken class photographs at a local school. I have read up on different types of lens but it is very confusing
Also are SIGMA lens good quality

I have 2 Sigma Eos lenses, never had a problem with them. There'll be the nay-sayers who will only use original Canon products, but I honestly can't see any problem with them.

Haven't done much with wide angle myself, so I'll be quite interested in the replies to this thread.

Funny how these things happen. Recently bought the 350D and have spent the last week looking into lenses. Completely new to the whole photography thing so took the advice of a colleague who has been at it for years.

He brought his entire bag of gear to work today to give me an idea of what lenses offer what.

All his lenses were sigma, his cameras (x3) were minolta. He has always been very satisfied with the results from his sigma lenses.

The wide angle lense he showed me was a Sigma 17-35mm f2.8-4 EX Aspherical .

He was very happy with the results from it.

One thing he did point out though is that it is not aimed at digital slrs that have the multiplication factor on the focal length. On the 20D it'd be a 27-56 equivalent to a film camera.

Every ounce of my being screams to only buy Canon.

However, I am going to order 2 sigma lenses for christmas. I just can't justify the massive extra money for the canon lenses.

Anyone else with experience that would like to point us in the right direction. I haven't order the lenses yet!

i use the canon 10-22 lens which i love but it's not cheap

read the canon eos forums at photo.net

where they discuss all kinds of stuff to do with lenses that will fit on your camera and then read the reviews at places like dpreview.com

there is no one simple answer to your question

I got the Sigma 10-20 a few months ago and I love it. Got it for around the same price in a shop in Cork as you'd get it online. I was considering the Canon 10-22 but didn't want to shell out all that extra money in the end. Get the Sigma, mine is lovely and contrasty and gives nice sharp shots.

Thanks to all who replied so promptly to my question on the lens. I havw looked at the Sigma lens since and also read a review on the lens ( It was in the top 5 wide angle lens in a photographic magazine) also Compared with Canon I will save €260.00

I use the Canon 300D and have Canon lenses. If you want to check out the difference a good lens makes, which are beyond what I am prepared to pay normally, I'd recommend you get the 50mm f1.8, which is fantastic quality but in the price range we play at (I got it for $90 in San Francisco). This has the optical quality of a $1000 lens by all accounts. Remember it is a prime lens, so you move your own ass, not zoom in or out; the picture quality lets you see why the pros buy €2000 lenses though.
