Anyone else think that 7 stickies is a little OTT? Any chance with some trimming, mods?

I'm up for helping if you like.

i don't, that just means on my screen the first 7 out of 19 threads are stickies, which isn't that bad....

It annoys me too. Not just this forum, but any with a lot of stickies. It means I've got to scroll to see all the new threads.

It'd be ideal if you could minimise the stickies, and only show them if they're updated.

Any prior art on where this works? Sounds kinda like it defeats the point of stickies...

I've never seen it done before, no.

Most regular users don't really need some of the stickies, they're generally for new posters who haven't read the charter or don't know where to get X Y or Z.

By minimise, I meant like the arrows on the User CP (collapse_tcat.gifcollapse_tcat_collapsed.gif). If you were going to start a new topic, you'd have a quick look at the stickies available.

I just don't like how half the page is taken up with threads I've already read.

It seems like the "what's acceptable" sticky could be merged into the charter thread... would be one less sticky.

You could have one sticky containing all the stickies.

Agreed, those are both basically charters. As I'd mentioned at the time in the "what's acceptable" one, it could do with some cleaning up. Only Kali's original post really is relevant, so maybe that could be moved into the charter.

There's defo room for improvement. I reduced the number of stickies by a total of 2 a while ago (removed 4, added 2). It could be pruned more though and I'm defo open to some help on this because the only reason I haven't done it is lack of time.

I added one yesterday on request. It was suggested by one of the other comp mods (can't remember who) but there were 3 "price my computer" threads on the main page, so it was time for a "price my computer" sticky. This should help keep the number of relevant threads on the main page to a maximum.

What's acceptable and the charter could defo be merged, but I think it'll have to be a mod that does that. I'll try to get to it in the next week or so and see what the other mods think of my attempt.

The minimum CPU / FSB one could go, or be replaced.

The IRC channel one could be merged with the useful websites (if gerry's ok with that).

    Other direct suggestions?

one "General Information: ReadMe First" sticky of all the stickies might work? Combine the charter into it, then when a section gets updated, just add that to the end like:

General Information: ReadMe First (update: online shops 24-11)

Replies could be started on a seperate thread, and info updated accordingly, and it would let the thread die naturally.

For example "how much is my rig worth?" will get dated within a month on a tech/comp forum, so not really be that useful.

Yeah that needs a major update but could be scrapped if the subforum idea goes thru..

As I mentioned in my OP, I'd be more than happy to help...
