Late night DART services for Christmas
    November 9th 2005

Special late night DART services will be provided during the Christmas period.

There will be one extra service departing the city centre at 12.30am each Friday and Saturday starting from Friday 9th December till Friday 23rd. This service will also operate on Thursday 22nd December.

Services to Bray will start from Connolly and call at all stations except Tara Street and Grand Canal Dock. Services to Howth will start from Pearse and call all stations except Tara Street.

No details of fares have been published, but Platfrom 11 notes the last scheduled Luas service is also 12:30am and normal fares apply.

Passengers should note a significant and growing portion of the DART fleet is fitted with CCTV equipment and we encourage Iarnrod Eireann to ensure these trains are deployed on all late night services not just these extra trains.

Rail service improvements from 11th December announced by Press Office
Minister for Transport Martin Cullen TD joined with Iarnród Éireann at Connolly Station today (Tuesday 29th November) to detail a range of Intercity and Commuter service improvements to take effect from 11th December.

The changes which will allow thousands of commuters daily to escape our congested roads for commuter rail services, and improved Intercity links.

Delivery of 36 new railcar carriages, currently ongoing, have provided the capacity to make these service improvements, the third successive year that major service changes have been delivered to customers. That process is set to continue in the coming years, with the delivery of a further 187 carriages between now and 2008.

    Maynooth line
On the Maynooth-Dublin commuter line, over 1 million additional passenger journeys annually are anticipated with the introduction of three new morning peak services from Maynooth to Connolly Station, as well as two new evening peak services.

As well as the introduction of new carriages, signalling work at Connolly Station as part of the DART Upgrade investment has allowed this major service boost.0

The new services will be added into the timetable as follows:

    Morning – Maynooth to Dublin
    06.27hrs to Pearse
    07.00hrs to Pearse
    *07.22hrs to Connolly
    07.36hrs to Pearse
    *07.45hrs to Connolly
07.57hrs to Pearse (continues to Bray)
    08.15hrs to Pearse
    *08.40hrs to Connolly
    09.02hrs to Pearse

    Evening – Dublin to Maynooth
16.34hrs from Pearse (strt from Gorey)
    17.15hrs from Connolly
    *17.28hrs from Connolly
17.40hrs from Pearse (start from Bray)
    *18.04hrs from Connolly
18.08hrs from Pearse (start from Bray)
    18.30hrs from Pearse
    19.00hrs from Pearse

    *= new service

Serving growing communities such as Maynooth, Leixlip, Clonsilla and Castleknock, as well as new developments at Ashtown, the Maynooth commuter line has experienced enormous growth in demand in recent years.

Over 2,000 additional commuters will be able to travel by rail daily on the three new services, which will give a fast frequent service to customers on the route.

There will also be additional off-peak services on the route, and additional services to Maynooth in morning peak and from Maynooth in evening peak to facilitate Maynooth students, and workers at locations such as Intel and Maynooth Business Park.

    Drogheda line

The Northern commuter line from Drogheda to Dublin will also gain an additional morning peak service from 12th December. Additional stops on higher capacity evening services will also be provided.

The new service will operate at 07.27hrs from Drogheda to Connolly, serving Laytown, Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush & Lusk and Donabate stations.

The 17.07hrs Connolly to Balbriggan service will also serve Donabate and Rush & Lusk for the first time. A number of services during the day will additionally serve Portmarnock, and there will be a new late evening service from Drogheda to Connolly, departing at 22.05hrs.

    Athlone and Kildare commuter

A new early morning commuter service will be introduced from Athlone on 12th December, departing the midlands town at 05.15hrs. Also serving Clara, Tullamore, Portarlington, and the Co Kildare commuter towns of Kildare, Newbridge, Sallins/Naas and Hazelhatch, it provides an early service to meet the changing needs of commuters in the Greater Dublin area.

    Cork commuter

Frequency will be increased seven days a week on the Cork-Cobh and Cork-Mallow commuter services from 11th December.

Frequencies will be increased as follows, with additional services at both peak and off-peak:

    FREQUENCY
    			Cork-Cobh Cork-Mallow
Current 20 each way daily 21 each way daily
From 12 Dec 22 each way daily 25 each way daily

    Gorey

An off-peak Arklow/Dublin service will be extended to Gorey in each direction (11.35hrs Dublin-Gorey; 14.12hrs Gorey-Dublin), and an additional evening return service from Gorey to Dublin will operate (20.25hrs).

    DART

Malahide and Portmarnock will benefit from an additional morning peak service, and two additional evening peak services in response to rising demand.

This is part of a minor demand-driven rebalancing of services between Howth and Malahide.

    INTERCITY

A range of Intercity service improvements will also be introduced from 11th December. There will be a major upgrade of Sligo-Dublin line services, the beginning of the transformation of the Cork-Dublin service as we prepare for an hourly service later in 2006, and improved Sunday services on a number of routes.

Fleet will be modernised on a number of services as well, with carriages over 30 and 40 years old replaced by modern railcars.

    Sligo-Dublin

The Sligo-Dublin service will increase in frequency from three services each way per day to five each way per day, the most significant change on the route in decades.

Furthermore, the 35-year old carriages currently operating the service will be replaced by new modern railcars, to improve performance and reliability on the route, and to improve accessibility to mobility-impaired customers.

    Current
    Dub-Sligo Sligo-Dublin
    08.30 07.40
    13.35 13.25
    18.15 18.00

    New
    Dub-Sligo Sligo-Dublin
    08.00 06.50
    11.00 08.50
    14.00 11.50
    17.00 14.50
    19.00 17.50

    Cork-Dublin

Services from Dublin-Cork will operate every two hours on a clockface timetable from 07.00hrs to 21.00hrs.
From Cork to Dublin will be every two hours from 05.30hrs to 17.30hrs, with the exception of 07.30hrs, when a 07.00hrs departure will operate instead.

As the new €117 million fleet for the Cork-Dublin route enters service during 2006, Iarnród Éireann will build up the service until an hourly service operates towards the end of the year. This will almost double the capacity on the route to 16,000 seats daily.

    Tralee-Dublin

Services to and from Tralee will be increased from five each way per day to seven each way per day, as services currently operating to and from Killarney are extended (05.50hrs and 11.55hrs from Tralee; 07.00hrs and 17.00hrs from Heuston, with changes at Mallow).

Also, benefiting Kerry’s important tourist businesses and regular weekend travellers, two additional services will be provided on Sundays from Tralee (11.00hrs and 15.45hrs), which includes an additional service from Killarney as well (11.37hrs).

The fleet used on the Tralee route will also improve, with all carriages dating from the 1960s which had been used on Cork-Tralee and Mallow-Tralee services replaced by modern railcars.

Galway, Limerick – extra Sunday services

Both Galway-Dublin and Limerick-Dublin will have an improved service on Sundays, to meet peak weekend demand on Intercity.

Galway-Dublin will see an additional service from Galway at 12.00hrs on Sundays, and two additional service from Heuston to Galway at 12.20hrs and 15.25hrs, bringing the Sunday frequency to six each way.

Limerick-Dublin benefits from two additional services from Limerick at 11.05hrs and 20.15hrs, with an additional service from Heuston at 15.00hrs, changing at Limerick Junction.

    Waterford-Limerick Junction

Service changes will allow for improved connections for customers to/from Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Ennis.

From March 27th – Waterford, Kilkenny and Carlow

Further improvements are planned in March, with the introduction of an additional service each way on the Waterford-Dublin route.

There will be a new early service from Waterford to Heuston, which will be Carlow’s second morning commuter service, and provide a commuter rail service from Kilkenny for the first time.

The new service will depart Waterford at 06.05hrs. It will leave Kilkenny at 06.49hrs, allowing those who travel daily to Dublin to use rail for the first time. It will call at Carlow at 07.18hrs, giving Carlow commuters an option to the existing 06.30hrs service.

An extra Dublin to Waterford service will also operate daily at 16.25hrs. The new services bring the frequency on the route to six each way per day.

An Iarnród Éireann spokesperson said “yet again this year we are directly bringing the benefits of our investment programme to a record and growing number of rail customers. We will continue this process year on year to ensure every route and every community we serve shares in the development of our rail services. With the support of funding under Transport 21, the Government’s 10-year infrastructure programme, we are building a world-class rail service for our customers.”

Full service details from 11th December are available online at www.irishrail.ie . Details are also available at 1890 778899, and at stations.

Customers on all routes and services are advised to check service details if travelling from 11th December onwards, as departure times on services may have changed.

    Cullen unveils commuter improvements

    29 November 2005 20:15
The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen, has announced a range of improvements to commuter and intercity rail services.

The Maynooth to Dublin commuter line will benefit most from the improvements. Capacity on this line will be increased by almost 40% at peak times.

There will be three extra trains in the morning and two in the evenings on weekdays. An extra 2,000 people will be able to use the service.

Iarnród Éireann says the Maynooth commuter line is one of the fastest growing population corridors in the country.

The changes will take place in less than two weeks' time.

Details were also announced of Kilkenny's designation as a Greater Dublin rail commuter belt station.

There will also be improvements to services for commuters in Cork, in particular the lines to Mallow and Cobh.

On the late night DART front normal fares will apply to the 12:30am services. Normal fares apply thus weekly, monthly and annual tickets are valid. However since 12:30am is 'tomorrow' day returns issued that day may not be valid.
