Is that the bottom of the barrel, I hear?
    BBC News wrote:
Channel 4 will screen a new series which aims to boost a congregation in a parish with poor church attendance.

With the working title Priest Idol, the show will give a vicar 12 months to boost the church's turnout.

Backed by advisors, the vicar will be able to spend an undisclosed sum of money on anything he or she thinks will appeal to parishioners.

Being filmed in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, the three-part series is due to be broadcast at the end of 2005.
a spokesman for the Church of England said he was not keen on the proposed title for the show.

"We obviously need to see how the programme pans out, but for the moment we would like to see a better title," he said.

"Priest Idol is too reminiscent of Pop Idol, and that wouldn't be a suitable format."
What would he prefer, Big Sacresty? I'm a Christian, Get Me Up There? Who Wants To Be In a Congregation?

Yeah, that last one was a bit of a reach alright...

I'm still waiting for 'Idle Idol' in which a bunch of tv exec's will sit around a table throwing ideas out there until one comes up with the most banal pitch ever.

it a poor title for the show, it more about the church using marketing to get numbers up, not trying to find a new zany priest.

It about this church which is about to close due to sheer lack of numbers and getting audi driving marketeers to drum up business, its not that good.

They seem to be saying that the church is only interested in getting more people into the church on a sunday, which I don't any church would use as a measure of sucess?

The Brand the came up with was Church-Lite.... with 50% less preaching then other churches :/

It's true that they are trying to get the numbers up but the bigger picture (it would seem to me) is that it is only a beginning to a much longer term goal i.e. having the Church as the centre of the community. From what the TV programme has shown, Lundwood is in dire need of something spiritual. It looks like a very bleak place to live.

I think it's a very interesting programme and I thought the scenes of Fr. James taking to the streets with a Donkey for Palm Sunday and then leading people into the Church was very inspiring.

Agreed. Tonights episode was about the launch of their "Church lite" campaign, where they essentially sell the church like a brand. It's an interesting concept, and I think a priest with a bit more charisma than the American guy could do well with it.
