    OK
so if i get the good one, as in the €400 euro one with the HD etc. i'll get xbox live straight from the box right, so once i set up that will i be able to play halo 2 online even tho its an old xbox game? its just that i don't have an xbox at the moment but i'm always playing halo 2 at friends house and would be great if you could do that with the 360.

    Thanks

First of all, XBox Live requires a broadband Internet connection.

Second, it is not entirely certain if the Xbox 360 can play older games. Microsoft said it will partially be backward compatible. No one tried Halo 2 on the 360 yet I think.

You can definitely play halo 2 but you need the hard disk to play it or any other xbox games. They released a list of what games are compatible with the 360, something like 212 titles. Check gamespot.com or xbox.com, they might have the list.

You'd also have to buy the Xbox Live gold membership. A three month will cost €30 and a 12 month for something like €59. Only silver membership is available straight out of the box.

Does free gold membership come with the premium pack? I saw a post somewhere else earlier and they said it did but I was sure it was just silver membership.

Just silver with both packages I'm afraid. At least you can get a 3 month subscription for a small sum. The actual price is €20 not €30. I'm getting my peripherals mixed up.

60 euros isnt much though for 12 months, it might seem like another added cost after buying the 360 but it should be worth it.

On the xbox website I think, it mentions a 1 month Gold trial out of the box. I originally thought it was just silver too

Also us Europeans get 25% less compatible games. Around 160 I think. I believe on the Inquirer they said there is a way to play old games without live, but it will require MS to send you a CD.

Yeah if your not connected to live you can call ms and they will send a cd free of charge with the patch to play your old game. Quite nice that!

However as an xbox live user, €60 a year is well worth the money, absolute class. Its great coming around teh final bend in forza ahead by a split second and taking the flag, its even more fun knowing that some chap in the US is kicking himself because he just couldn't catch you!

Just curious, why does he have to buy the gold membership?

The silver membership that all 360's will come with will not let you play games online, but will let you download the patches to let you play your old xbox games. To play the games online you'll be needing the gold membership, which is basically the same as the standard live membership that anyone with the original xbox already has.

it turns out that the backwards compatibility software can be downloaded on a normal PC from the xbox360 website, burned to CD/DVD and inserted in the 360 to update the backwards compatibility...hackers are frantically trying to find exploits as we speak!
