I need some advice on how do get onto a lap top. I got my bro's old lap top and there's a windows password on it. He can't remember it so I decided to upgrade the machine to XP pro. Would this solve the problem or will I still be asked to log onto XP with this password? Will upgrading the OS format the drive and clear all win 2000 related crap?

Unless there is stuff on it you need then may be better off doing a clean XP install than an upgrade which may inherit previous problems.

Don't forget you need a legit non-OEM copy of XP that isn't in use elsewhere to do the install for licensing compliance. And support from microsoft is included in the price.

Your post count is far too low for people to trust your description of how you got the laptop, so don't expect a crack.

depends on how you do your upgrade.
I've never used on of Microsofts upgrade products, but I assume it is similar to installing XP fresh except you dont have to format. If you do a complete format and install XP Pro from that, you wont have to enter the password. I'm not sure about the upgrade route though. Logic would say that yes you would have to.

What are the specs of the laptop? You might be better off reinstalling 2000 as XP is more system demanding.
