My mate has moved to KraKow(50N, 20E) in south Poland, what sort of dish size would you need to get Astra 2D for RTE BBC and ITV.

My guess is a 2.5 meter dish, based on user reports from kingofsat.net but have no proof of this. Does anyone know how much this type of dish would cost, an would center fed be better than an offset?

1.8m for Krakow on astra2d.com, others using a 2.4x2.7m eliptical dish.

2.5 should be enough, in that case. Rain margin is never a bad thing.

    The theory goes something like:

    <1.2M Offset dish
    1.2M-4M Prime focus
    >4M Cassegrain

AFAIR there are 'lambda' values which measure dish sizes and efficiencies to come up with the above.

In practice, it depends as much on the dish construction as much as the dish type. Solid > mesh. One piece > petalised. Aluminium/steel > fibre glass. Generally you'll find the better dishes are the more expensive ones. DHSatellite manufacture some of the best.

Also you need to remember that it's important to match the feedhorn and the dish. If they are mismatched, you may be using only part of the dish area.

You can't beat other people's experience though, so it's worth searching other sat forums for reception reports.

There are a number of native dish manufacturers in Poland, so prices should be better.

I think I have an article from the Satkurier sat mag about Astra 2D reception in Poland. If I can find it at the weekend, I'll post it here.

In not far from southern Polish border as the crow flies, and 2D wont come in on a 1,2M dish (solid offset with 0,3db lnb) so whatever you do, use a better dish and bigger.
I just have not had time to really investigate this, tho I can see a signal under the threshold alright. RTE is on Horizontal beam and is a lot weaker so dont expect it at all. Then again UTV and BBC1 is out there on vertical, so its not all bad!
    Best of luck.
