Boot Problem

I have a HP zv5000 Notebook that has been operating perfectly since I bought it 15 months ago and was operating fine when I rebooted it. After restarting it hung on a blinking cursor and went no further.
The bios reports HD diagnostics as unavailable and when I try to run it it says no IDE device present.
I then tried to run diagnostics using Powermax which detects the drive ok and gives the following information

    Power Connection: Passed
    Interface Cable connection: Passed
    Master/Slave jumpers: Passed
    Bios Extension Support: Failed
    Partition Information : Read Fail
    Smart Attribute Read: Passed
    Smart Threshold Check: Passed
    Smart Attribute Check: Passed

Any Ideas or has my hard drive gone tits up

could be a corrupt 'master boot record',

I'd take out the drive and access it from another PC, see if you can repair it, if not back up what data you can access and give it a format.
Then pop it back in the laptop and rebuild.

    Hi Jum4;
Yeag I tried all that in vain any utility that I can get to recognise the disk reports read/write errors as soon I try to modify the MBR or run a format.
I think it's gone to hard drive heaven:(
So I ordered a replacement hopefully nothing else is wrong.

    Thanks for your help:)

My zv5000 will be 15 months old next month

Have you tried a Linux boot disk? Boot into Linux and see if you can salvage anything from the disk.

I have indeed most utilities including the laptops bios can't even detect the disk
those that do detect it run into read/write errors as soon as try to access the disk.
I have also tried all the utilities on Herons boot cd but nothing can access the drive. and any read/write tests comes up with 100% bad sectors.
BTW the HD in question is a Toshiba MK4025GAS but I can't find any evidence that they are prone to failure.
My Brothers laptop has the same HD and it works fine in my HP so it's definatley fooked.
I also tried to format this evening in powermax but it hangs on 0% and eventually comes up with the message "This Drive is Failing; Back up any data you can access, yada yada"
