Seconday Bone Cancer...

My boyfriend's mother had breast cancer about a year ago ... She went through chemotheropy and got the all clear a few months back.
.... She woke up during the night recently with bad pains in her back and her legs... she has now been diagnosed with bone cancer. The doctors say there is no cure, they are going to do radiotherapy and give her some kind of injections to prolong her life and ease the pain...
... I was looking up alternative medicines on the internet and came across a herbal tea called Essiac which has helped cancer patients and in some cases cured people who doctors had said were incurable...
... Does anyone know where I can get Essiac?... Does anyone know of anyone who has used it?

you should really ask you doctor about medicine around pain reduction.

mayoclinic.com is a really good website for informative information
    http://www.mayoclinic.com/print/bone-cancer/DS00520/DSECTION=all&METHOD=print&

there is also some good techiques around posture and fatigue management/ progressive musclar relaxation that can be done be a multi disciplinary team (eg physio, OT, nurse)

The Irish Cancer Society operates a FreeFone Cancer Helpline, which is staffed by fully qualified nurses trained in cancer care.

The Cancer Helpline is open Weekdays 9am-5pm and Tuesdays 'til 9pm. The service is free to use, confidential and may be reached by phoning 1 800 200 700.

Snorlax advice is correct, except that it isn't primary bone cancer, but secondary spread of cancer from the breast to the bones which is unfortunately relatively common in breast cancer. The correct name is secondary spread or bone metastases.

Radiotherapy is good for this sort of pain as it is caused by pressure on the surrounding inflexible bone by growing cancer tissue. This is discrete lesions which are ideal to use radiotherapy on to shrink the tumour and reduce pain.

There are good pain control ladders that are effective, but it is important to know that pain is something which can be effectively tackled and you don't need to live with it.

I would be cautious about alternative therapies, most do not have an evidence base and that is why doctors don't prescribe them. Her doctor should be advised though if thinking about pursuing alternative therapies as they can interact with what she is receiving.

If you have more questions, please feel free to post them up, but please remember that the best person to ask for information is the doctor(s) looking after her.

lucky i'm not a doctor so!

my Aunty had cancer in her bone so i know that it's pretty horrible as you feel helpless and there's nothing really much you can do about it. there is a good few support groups around though www.cancer.ie (irish cancer society ) has a few.

anyhow look after yourself and i hope she gets better :).

Breast cancer is a common cancer and thus there is a lot of new research out there for treatment. Certain cancer cells express HER receptors and if it is positive, then Herceptin can be used very effectively to treat it (and all the notoriety it arose in the Mater Hospital). not all cancers express this however.

Zofran or ondansetron is a anti-nausea medication, related to the use of any cancer treatment.

please do not recommend purchasing any medications illegally on the internet.
