Anybody got one of these?? or a link Ive been googling all morning. its a bog standard 98 1.6

there was a burning smell in it yesterday morning, now the radio, clocks and interior lights dont work, no fuses blown, car is running fine and everything else works. this should be easy enough to pinpoint if I had a wiring diagram,
Have the dash off but cant find anything obviously burnt.
    All help welcome.

Call to a dealer, be extra nice, tell them you have a problem with the loom and could you pretty please borrow the documentation while you run down to the nearest photocopying shop.

If you cant get a diagram, find yourself a mulimeter and begin a process of elimination.

This is exactly what I dont want to do. we are in work at the moment and have limited time.

Some more googling, by a friend has revealed that it is probably a voltage regulator or meter control unit, anybody know where these are situated?

"Burning smell" could come from a few sources.
Given your interior lights also do not work, I might suggest checking if the contacts in the key switch or some switch element of the ingnition key may have burned out. Any overheating of the key, ie, is it ever hot when removed from the ignition.
Alternatively look for a faulty connection if you hve a distribution/fuse box under the dash.
Do you have any added features like aftermarket fog lamps, high wattage light bulbs, or any high current draws.
It is possible for items to overheat, melt insulation and recover..... or fail.

There are also items called fusible links, these are soft metal link fuses soldered into the wiring loom, usually easy to find cause the are bulky and much larger than the general diameter of the wires they are part of.
