Palermo 64 vs Barton

Is the Palermo 64 significantly faster than a similarly clocked Barton (obviously only taking into account 32bit apps)?

Specifically, I was planning on getting a Barton 1.9GHz (i think Athlon XP 2600+?) but I seem to have waited too long and now supplies have run out, forcing prices through the roof. Now it looks like I'm going to settle for a Palermo 64 128KB 1.8GHz (Sempron 64 3000+) for $13 more.

I can't find any benchmarks pitting them directly against each other. Does anyone know such a benchmark?

I think your getting mixed up here mate. Palermos are well dead five or six yeards ago and certainly were never 64bit.
    Semperon64 3000;s are Socket754 while Athlon XP's are socketA.
So basically what ya said abov was a whole mismash of contradictions

I think you're getting mixed up :) You're probably thinking of the Palomino, which was the first AthlonXP from 1500+ to 2100+.

Palermo is the latest Sempron, a cut-down Athlon64 like the Paris core it replaces. The most recent Palermo Semprons have even been left with 64bit support intact, and this is the processor I'm talking about.

I know they use different sockets, but I haven't chosen a motherboard yet, and that will obviously depend on which CPU I go for. I think comparing the two is sensible since they're a similar price.

You might want to wait until the S939 Sempron's come out? Just to leave yourself with a much better upgrade path. The S754 is pretty much totally dead, you're gonna be stuck with a 3700+ and an AGP card as the fastest things u could ever slot into the system. The S754 Athlons make a lot more heat than their S939 equivalents too.

But in respons to original Q, I've seen a lot of benchmarks saying that the Sempron is pretty much as good as the Athlon 64 at the same clock speed for gaming. They tend to be good overclockers too, since theres so little cache on them theres not as much to hold back the overclock.

EDIT: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/200/1 Here's a review of the palermo core sempron. Pretty crappy review though, all canned benchmarks.

Heh, I've waited since June 2004 for a new PC, and I ain't waiting any longer :)

Besides, I'm aiming at a $70 motherboard, and if I ever wanted to get anything faster than A64 3700+ (~$300) and faster than the best AGP graphics cards (~$400) that an extra $70+ for a compatible motherboard wouldn't seem very significant :)

Didn't you know? "Future proof" is the biggest con in the industry! :)

Yeah thats true, but the S939 chips are much much much nicer for overclocking if you're so inclined. You could always convince yourself that you'd save it back on electricity too ! :v :v :v

Every little helps when justifying spending the extra cash
