sounds too good to be true. Id like to see more stats. Bearing in mind how much winding you have to do to get a bloody radio to work!

granted this laptop should be a lot more efficient than most, but its still has a backlight and a GUI to take care of.

Look at the DVD players you can get nowadays with built in screens for €120 ish. They are more or less linux PC's without a keyboard. So you could save a bit on money by not having the DVD and associated royalties, and keyboards can be got for a fiver. Don't forget people used to get real work done on 4.77 MHz XT's - these are 100 times faster !

The proposed design of the machines calls for a 500MHz processor, 1GB of memory and an innovative dual-mode display that can be used in full-colour mode, or in a black-and-white sunlight-readable mode. The display makes the laptop "both an electronic book and a laptop", he said.

For connectivity, the systems will be Wi-Fi- and cell phone-enabled, and will include four USB ports, along with built-in "mesh networking," a peer-to-peer concept that allows machines to share a single Internet connection.

Five companies are working with MIT to develop an initial 5 million to 15 million test units within the year: Google, Advanced Micro Devices, News Corp., Red Hat and BrightStar, Negroponte said. He said the current plan is to produce 100 million to 150 million units by 2007
Looking at the size and lack of moving parts and WiFi , I want one already - if they are as ruggidised as they sound they would be a nice replacement for a tablet pc costing 10 times the price !

I'm not certain of this I believe the $100 mark is reached only when over 5million of these are built so who is paying the $500 million for all those PCs?
