IBM NetVista A21 - Format Advice - Issues?

    Hi,
A friend has an IBM NetVista A21 computer running crippleware aka windowsME. This pc has a virus but before it was infected it ran a bit sluggish. I was thinking of formating the HDD and installing win98SE as it much more pc friendly than winME.

What I wanted to know is are there any issues with IBM desktops regarding reinstalling etc. Don't want to start something I can't finish.

    Appreciate all help and advice.

Naa I do it all the time in work(IBM). Grand machines. Id suggest Windows 2000 though. Runs like a dream on these machines

Was thinking of using XP specs seem to support it. Only concern re pc is the modem, my friend has no discs for it will XP have the drivers or will she have to get a new modem?

assuming it has the original shipped modem, then just get the drivers from IBM's website.

google "thinkpad driver matrix" and select the model.

XP will run, but overall 2k will be a more tolerable experience!

Thanks Souper. Btw its either 98SE or XP, thinking of XP.

ohh, toughie. 98 is quick and diry but XP is has a lot more extra anti code execution stuff for the end user.

If its got (or will get) 256MB RAM, I guess go XP. Much as I like 98, I think Xp would be a better solution long-term.

XP is best and if the hardware will support it (256MB RAM minimum, decent-ish CPU etc) that's the way I'd be going.

I used to work for IBM as well and NetVistas/ThinkCentre's/ThinkPad's are great machines, plus driver support has gotten a LOT better in the past 5 years.

Goto http://www.pc.ibm.com/support and put in the 7 character Model number. You'll get drivers for almost every opsys there :)
