I'm a canon man myself but the new Nikon d200 looks class for the price, just can't wait to see what canon hits back with.

I agree the D200 looks very nice . I'm sure it will be the benchmark for it's class for the next little while, probably until Canon replace the 20D.

Just a merry-go-round really. Canon and Nikon users should appreciate that they need each other for their respected brands to continually push out better products.

it's not even a relevant debate anyway even if you were starting one.

i've never seen a truely great photo that was taken with one of those camera brands that the other brand couldn't have taken just as well in the hands of the right photographer

the limiting factor for every brand of camera is the person behind the lens, not the camera body

Here's a good comparison of both of them, just kind of highlights both of their stronger points.

I agree 100% DotOrg, at the end of the day it is the photographers skill and knowledge that takes the pictures, not the cameras features for sure.

but the debate...if I was starting one....witch I'm not....is still relevant to someone who is in the market for a camera. Each make has it's strengths and weaknesses, and I think people should consider these before making a purchase..no?

both nikon and canon are so strong that neither will genuinely make any difference to the final picture quality and the lens is 200% more important than the body anyway

The argument will go on for years, the competition between nikon and canon especailly in the digital age of photography, have pushed the boundaries and this is great for the consumer, more choice. At the end of the day as people have stated its the photographer behind the camera no matter what they have in there hand, but with a high spec camera behind a photographer it can make life alot easier. At present the nikon d200 out shines the canon 20d(over a year old) so just wait to see what canon will announce in the new year in this range.

At present the nikon d200 out shines the canon 20d
but there's no picture the d200 can take that the 20d can't take just as well and vice-versa

DotOrg, I said it outshines it, not take better pictures. The new nikon has a bigger mega pixel count 10million compared too 8.2, exposure compensation range is better -5 to +5 compared to -2 to +2, nice lcd screen 2.5 inch compared to 1.8 inch, spot metering on the nikon and more if you compare on dpreview. These advantages do out shine the canon 20d(still an excellent camera) and if I were in the market looking to get into the digital photography this camera would be high on my list.

DotOrg - we agree with you. I agree with you anyway.

I think myself and Dublinguy are saying basically the same thing - that yes it's the photographer that makes the picture, but there are things to consider when puchasing a camera.

    why would pro buy a 1Ds over a 350?

    Burst mode and build quality.

I prefer Canon myself. It's always been Canon cameras in my house so I've grown to like the brand.

(Also they gave me a discount on my 350D =D)

    I'm a canon man myself!

My dad was, so I was always going to end up with 'em! :P

Canon man here, too, again, me da was too, and his da!

I like the Nikons, and can see why people like them, but I've never had a problem with Canons.

At the end of the day, "it's the photographer that makes the picture" is the best attitude to take.

My first SLR was a pentax ME Super. I have to say it's still one of my favorite cameras that I've owned. Unfortunately I lost if off the side of a cateramaran a few years ago. :( . I still have a pentax f2 50mm lens if anyone is interested?

anyone else using SLR of other makes?

Phenix DC303N personally. Not at all well known. Fairly budget but apparently they're huge in manufacturing. I guess maybe they make bodies for other companies. *shrugs* I quite like it....now... I hated it at first because I only got bad photos from it but I put that mainly down to be totally clueless about f-stop/proper timing, ignoring the light meter and some old/bad film. It has an f1.7 50mm with it and I bought two Tamron lenses since for it (70-210mm and 28mm). Got some nice pictures on my trip to Austria in September but haven't put it to much use recently. Takes a standard Pentax K fitting lens so it's not difficult to acquire lenses for - I got one of mine from e-bay and the other from ffordes in Scotland.

I don't believe I've ever used another SLR. Two biggest things I'm missing for it would be a neck strap and a flash, both of which I intend to rectify soon. Then I just have to get out and take some photographs!

Canon (canon) knocks the sox off Nikon (digital).

Personally I think the differences are marginal.
Both companies deliver great tools in the hands
of pros. I guess if you are comparing pro dSLRs
then that should be the acid test.
The usual advice is avoid the brands debate and
we should just get on with taking good photos.

Canon have a bigger R&D budget.
I'm not sure what you mean by
"The Japs aye" - both companies are Japanese
owned and that is where their legacy is.

Canon (canon) knocks the sox off Nikon (digital).

    Lens Quality

Nikons lens lineup is at least on a par with Canon.
I'd say that for wide zooms, 12-24mm, 17-35mm, 17-55mm DX
the Nikons actually have the edge and the 70-200mm f/2.8
Nikon is a stellar lens. Canon may have a slight edge for longer
focal length teles eg for wildlife/sports use but I can't vouch
one way or another for that as I've never worked with
    those focal lengths.

    Build Quality
on a par. The 1ds mkII is huge and I guess this creates an
impression of increased ruggedness but I'd say the D1X, D2H
and D2X cams are of equal build & strength.

    Image Quality
Well I guess image quality is a combination of at the very
least lens/optics quality and the sensor. Canons sensors
are definitely a step ahead of Nikon but the whole full
frame sensor (and there merits or otherwise) debate is
another days discussion. Canon has better in-camera
noise control but when properly exposed both makes
can produce excellent images where noise grain is not
an issue when you go to print.

    Battery life

hmm, the D70 and D2X battery life is excellent.
I can't imagine Canon could outdo either. The
D1X has/had battery life issues but makes up for
it in terms of great image quality and backup
batteries aren't expensive for that camera compared
to the investment in the camera body.

    Use-ability

Many say (even Canonians) that the Nikon usability
and ergonomics outweight the Canon. i.e this is
    one of Nikons strong points.

    Bells and Whistles

    ...

    Image Stabilisation

Built into the lenses which require it , eg 70-200mm f/2.8 VR
    80-200 f/2.8 VR, 200mm f/2 VR.

    Custom Functions

    Way, way, way better

Canon eos 1ds - the daddy!

I've never not been able to print an image off my Canon.

Apologies ...... I meant to add my comments to Shep's original
quote and instead I put those comments into the quoted text.
Just to clarify -- I have tried to balance the lists of categories
which Shep quoted as Canons strengths by adding some of
    my own observations.

sorry for any confusion. I just wasn't used to the post reply/quote
    user interface.

great reply iplogger1 - a knowledge of the topics rather than biased statements is what people need to make the right choice (for them) bewteen cameras.
