    Hey y'all,

My sister is looking into getting a group broadband scheme in her area. Anyone ever get one going or know what needs to be done?

How does it generally work? wireless? how do they get the connection to the antenne for transmitting if it is wireless (e.g. T1 lines or what?) or is it just a lobby to get broadband equipment installed in the local exchange?

Thanks for any information or advice.

The schemes which have been approved so far fall into two main groups. Firstly there is a group of pure wireless plays. This is where the ISP uses a wireless to distribute the service, and a connection from the backhaul directly to the transmitter. The backhaul is normally either a fibre or DSL connection.

The second play is where the backhaul is provided via satellite, and this seems to be the most common approach in Ireland. It has a number of disadvantages which include problems with VoIP and gaming. Some of the providers who use this approach claim to have overcome these problems.

AFAIK there is only one GBS scheme which has resulted in the local exchange being upgraded, and that was in Wicklow. In addition to the site pointed to by Sponge Bob you may also want to look at www.bb4ne-wicklow.info This is the website of the GBS for which I am the co-ordinator. We are on the verge of going live after a long struggle and a few setbacks.
