    Degaussing, clearly!

It it pretty much the same idea as running a magnet over your "Backstreet Boys" audio cassette to hide the evidence afaik, except on a larger scale (room of hard drives kind of thing)

So you plan on walking into a store that has loads of VHS tapes & old audio cassettes? ;)

I have a few hundred old DLT backup tapes to dispose of but I have to degauss them first, as they contain confidential data. At a glance, it costs about €700 to buy a degausser. This is just a once-off operation so hiring one would make more sense.

had to get some tapes done recently but sent them via post to get done dlt 7000/8000 needed to be used in a DLTVS80, they might hire you a degausser though.

The security tag removal devices in clothes shops are essentially just big magnets. You could also construct one yourself and hook it up to the mains with a little patience. That should wipe the sh*t out of anything.
