Buying a laptop

    Hey there.

I am thinking about buying a laptop to serve me as a desktop PC, because I currently live in Ireland but I might be doing some travelling in 4 or so months, so I wouldnt be able to transport a regular desktop one. I am looking to spend about 1-1.3k Euro for the machine.

I browsed the sites suggested for buying the laptops, got totally lost, but decided that perhaps a Toshiba Satellite M50 would suit my needs. I found it here: http://www.bms.ie/toshiba2.htm#M50 .

    Anyways, here we go:

1 - I need a considerably good graphics card for gaming purposes, not top of the line, but at least something thats more or less the same as the one I have in my desktop - a GeForce FX 5500, 256MB DDR. I am having some trouble in comparing desktop graphics cards with the ones in laptops, never having owned one before.
2 - I dont care that much for the size of the display, 14 inches would do fine.
3 - Is it possible to change the graphics cards in a laptop and if so, where do I look up the compatibility with the motherboard?
4 - What the hell is VAT and is it possible to avoid paying it somehow, maybe getting a tax refund in the airport or so?
5 - Is it possible to assemble your own laptop from the parts you choose in any retail outlet or do they only come in completed models?
6 - If tv-out was present, would I be able to use the TV screen as my display for everything I do? That is, would it not slow down the machine, if I were, for example, gaming?

    Thanks.

look at the acer 5024 thread that i started.

    1. it has a x700 graphics card
    2. it has a 15.4 inch screen (1400x1000) I think
    3. not possible to change graphics card unless you spend
3000euro on a high end dell or alienware
    4. buy the laptop from jes.de as the price of the laptop there
is the same price as here including vat.
    5. its is possible but there are not much savings to be made
as it will end up costing the same or more!
    6. yes there is a tv out and it wouldn't slow down anything.
only thing is that the tvout usually is pretty bad quality, at
    least in my experience.

    hope this helps

We use Toshibas laptops in work (M1) I think
my advice would be to stay away.
