I got one there the other day as an early birthday/christmas present. Never mind the previous poster, the laptop is spot on and haven't had any trouble with it to date, infact i'm posting on it as we speak. The laptop that Dunnes are currently selling (yes I do work for them and no I'm not getting played for this plug) is:

    Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Laptop
    Model Number: Amilo L7300
    1.4Ghz Intel Celeron M
    15" Screen
    40Gb HDD
    Built in WiFi
    4 USB Ports
    1 PCMCIA Port
    CD/DVD+/- Rewriter

That's all I can remember off the top of my head at the minute. Plays some recent enough games decently too. When I say recent enough I mean the likes of Max Payne 2 at 800x600 res and stuff like that. Ohh and it's €749, not €769.

Yes I looked at it in dunnes a while ago. For 749 its an absolute bargin, mind you 749 doesnt buy you much!

For a beginner, or someone who doesnt require the laptop to do anything very demanding then its worth it. However if you plan on playing any games I wouldnt recommend it as it only has integrated graphics and a celeron chip, while it will play some titles it wont play the most demanding.

None, Dunnes management stopped giving staff discounts about 2 yeas ago as it was costing them too much money. They put it all into giving us christmas bonuses instead.

Anyone know how this compares to the one in tesco? I think it's around the 780 mark but that's including a carry case. Information I have is:

    iQon Power Notebook
    1.4Ghz Intel Celeron M
    15.4" Screen
    40Gb HDD
    256MB RAM
    3 USB Ports
    1 PCMCIA Port
    Firewire Port
    10/100 Lan
    DVDRW multi drive

Which one's best, Dunnes seems to have it by a nose.

Hmmm I don't know a huge amount about laptops but those specs (apart from the dvd-rw drive) seem fairly standard for that price? Anybody think the same?

DVDRW drives are fairly standard on pretty much all laptops from €700 up these days.

I personally wouldn't buy either an iQon or a Fujitsu Siemens - especially not a Celeron - and DOUBLE especially not from Dunnes. I just don't think either of them is a particularly good brand. I'd stick with Toshiba, hp or (possibly) Sony, myself.

Do Dunnes have certified trained computer technicians that can fix any problems that might arise with the machine without invalidating the warranty? No? HOW SURPRISING!

Buy a laptop from a reputable computer retailer. You'll be better off in the long run.

I have to say that Fujitsu-Siemens laptops seem to be excellent! We got an Amilo laptop in January 2002 and it's still going rock-solid since then. I haven't had to format it once since we got it and it's even taken 2 spills of water on it! The hard drive is maxed out and it got it's fair share of viruses in the past. We use it constantly and still everything works as it should, albeit a bit slower nowadays.

Only problem is it won't work with the Driver Theory Test CD. I think it is a top-quality laptop anyway. Far fewer problems with it than the other computer had intermittently for the last few months. Which is the same age btw

Best vaule laptops at the moment are Acer from the UK or Germany. Savage spec, great warranty and good build quality. I currently have a Sony Vaio s1xp but will be buying this, 256MB X700!! all for €1, 650 inc. 3 years int. collect and return from shopacer.co.uk. I spend 3 years working with laptops and wouldn't touch IQon or Dell, would be slow to recommend Fuji and not Toshiba's biggest fan either.

    # Intel Pentium M 760 2.0GHz Processor
    # 15.4” WXGA CrystalBrite TFT display
    # 1024MB DDR2 RAM
    # 100GB Hard Drive
    # DVD-RW Dual Double Layer Drive
    # 256MB Mobility Radeon X700 Graphics Card
    # Gigabit Ethernet & 802.11
    # Hybrid TV tuner & remote control

Acer do entry level models priced at the 'Dunnes' price with similar spec. Microaid and Elara do them in Dublin but ad a few hundred to the price of every model. The above spec can be got from Comtech in Germany for €1,300 as the Acer Aspire 1694

Just a reply to the guy saying that you get a free carry case with the laptop in Tesco, this is also the case with the laptop in Dunnes.
