We are planning a trip to New York in December - 2006 that is. Yes we plan well ahead.

We have stayed in the Pennsylvania Hotel before but found it very very dirty but brilliantly located.

Can anyone recommend a nice clean hotel - well located that does not require me to re-mortgage the house to stay in?

Check out www.tripadvisor.com. I've stayed in the Pennsylvania Hotel and it's the worst hotel I've ever had the misfortune to stay in. It took the good out of our break. Yuk

Well I can tell you maybe where not to go....

I stayed in the Milford Plaza last November in New York. It has a really central location and is literally one street away from Time Square. Although the opposite direction isn't the best of areas, close to bus station and supposely a bit rough, but I never found that to be a problem. The only bad point is the service of that place. I know New York is known for is bad manners, but you wouldn't really expect it from hotel staff. Well here, don't expect a smile or please from reception. And don't let the guys take your bag to your room as they demand the amount of tip they want! The rooms are small and basic and probably could do with a revamp. And don't even start with me about the coffee shop at the corner of that street. But if you just want somewhere to sleep and be in central location...

I say you get what you pay for and if you can afford it, pay that bit extra.

The Dylan Hotel is brilliantly located and very very nice atmosphere, a bit pricey but not extortion. www.dylanhotel.com

Very much incorrect. If you look at many of the hotels you'll see as many good as their are bad. While I wouldn't let Tripadvisor be the be-all and end-all of anyones desicion process, I'd certainly make sure to take heed of what it says.

if you look at my post again you will that i have stated "in my experience" which is me solely offering advice based on my experiences of the website. I have also advised to use the website as a "guideline" so what exactly is very much incorrect?

I was just back from New York, we stayed a 1 block further down from Hotel Pennsylvania in a Hotel called Affinia Manhattan (previously known as Southgate Towers) So still technically across from Madison Square Gardens & Penn Station. Whichi Im aware you enjoyed that particular area.

Now i have to say that the rooms are small, and bathroom is small (but has a bath&shower etc) the beds were voted the most comfortable beds in Manhattan. They make there own Affinia Beds. I would definetely recommend it. I booked with Tour America, and I think on there website they have offers of 55 euros per night. I stayed in a Basic Room which i have to say was very clean, the most comfortable bed, tv, dressing table, internet access, digital safe etc. You can check them out at www.affinia.com

Try " The Travel Inn" on W42 st.
Its cheap clean and central (only 5 mins from Times Sq).
One downer is the building works down the street, but as you will not be there during the day it should not be a problem.

Depends who you are going with and what you want in terms if comfort and facilities.

I stayed in the Pickwick Arms Hotel on East 51st St. Clean, basic and cheap. My room was a very small single with shared bathroom i.e you have a sink and the bathroom is down the corridor. The hotel has no dining facilities but there is a nice french restaurant on the ground floor (probably leased from the hotel) and a great little diner around the corner for breakfast. It is about 5 min walk from the nearest subway station. I noticed that they were renovating all the rooms while I was there. I booked it (very late) through cheaphotels.com and it worked out at about $99 per night.
