They shouldn't stop someone purely due to their 'ethnicity', unless they have a specific reason such as looking for a person fitting a particular ethnic description. It probably ends coming across as a tad racist but you only stop black drivers when you're looking for a black driver, white for white...

The idea for this actually came out of something that was said in another thread. It is not just done for my own entertainment but to get some feedback.

In Australia there seems to be a huge swing in opinion against people of middle eastern appearance who white Australians think should be stopped and questioned purely on their appearance.

We are also witnessing rioting in Paris by people of non French background in response to middle class white people victimizing them.

So now this is not some whimsical attempt at getting attention but something that affects a lot of people including Irish people who have seen an influx of immigrants/refugees in the past number of years.

It might seem like that to you, but I didn't think so (up to May 2005 anyway).

Your post seems to imply that I am not very media savvy and that I am taken in by sensationalist stories promulgated by the likes of Ray Martin or Channel Nine.

Just to be sure you don't think I am some kind of dumbed down idiot I actually come from a journalistic background so I am well aware of how the media operate. My father was an assistant editor of the Irish Press before its demise and my grandfather worked there most of his life.

In my time as a reporter I had the privilege of meeting many amazing investigative journalists including Veronica Guerin (shortly before she died), Fintan O'Toole, John Pilger whom I admire for 'his tell it like it is' approach to news and many others.

Maybe this subject makes people uncomfortable because people of non white backgrounds are not really accepted as being Irish or Australian or whatever and perhaps are not ready to accept they might be racist.

I don't buy into the PC bullsheet though. If you are at the national convention for jews, and a guy walks in with a swostica tatto'd on his forehead...he's up to something. If a middle eastern looking guy is hanging around the american embassy with a large rucksack on, he could be up to something, but if he's not, what harm is it to ask him? *OMG* You asked him because of the way he looks? *SHOCK* that means you better search that guy across the street wearing a suit walking in the oppisite direction...just to even it out like..

It's the life and times we live in, and its not like any one individual is getting stopped several times a day, and if i was ever stopped very briefly and searched because i am white i couldn't give a toss...so why should anybody else?

I'm not saying every person of one race should be stopped systematicly because of their race and no matter what they are doing, im talking about in circumstances like those i mentioned above.

I honestly dont see much of a problem with this so called racial profiling. It goes on all over this country by both the Police and civilians. For example, when there is a traveller funeral in my town, every pub "closes" for a few days and refuses to let any travellers into the pubs, and we all say fair play to the publican. Its just common sense at work.

Edit: I wont vote on the basis that the question is extremely vague.

No no, I'm trying to encourage intelligent debate. If you actually have a valid point, it should wholly possible to fully explain your opinion in an intelligent and comprehensive manner without using any of the words I've mentioned.
