Bloody big wasp nest in my attic!

I considered posting this in the Animals/pet issues forum but these are insects and certainly not pets.

    Look at all the wasps!!

I've had a couple ducks living in my garden for a while, even a pigeon or two in my attic, but these are just pushing their luck. There are millions of them. How do you get rid of them? Are wasp nests usualy this big? Can I exploit them and market some sort of wasps honey?

    Wasp Honey :p .
That looks really bad though, and those things give one hell of a nasty sting, i reckon a professional may be needed. I wouldnt get to close.

Wow, that's gonna be tough to get rid of. My father had the same prob a few years ago and he smoked em out with a fire and a hoover blowing out air, lol. Got a load a stings in the process but it worked. Might be better to get a professional though, the fathers cracked, doesn't seem to feel pain, does his own stitches when he gets cut for feck sake, lol.:D

My father is too big to get in at it so he's leaving me to get rid of it. I only discovered the thing about half an hour ago. I always used to wonder why there were so many wasps dying about the place. I thought my house was like the local wasp grave yard or something. When I was browsing boards or doing college work inside on my PC every now and again I'd always find a dead wasp in my coffee. It never ocurred to me that there might be a nest somewhere so I put up with it and dismissed it as one of those weird laws of nature. I supose I'll just wait untill after the coldest day in winter so they'll all die off before I go at it with a spade, blow torch and bag. There will be no mercy. This is revenge for all of those wasted cups of coffee.

From what i've seen on TV bees don't like smoke. Wasp being like bees but more bastardish won't like smoke either. Therefore my suggestion, would be to start a small fire in your attic to get rid of the wasp problem.

We rang the ISPCA askin the most humane way to get rid of them [yeah i know....] and they gave us the name of a local beekeeper who got rid of them for us....
what he wanted with a load of wasps i dont know...

Call in a professional. We had a big nest in our attic 2 weeks ago and the feckers were coming into my bedroom in the mornings and dying all over the place. Filthy pests :X

We had to call back the same guy twice, initially they were under the fascia under the gutter and he applied some liquid stuff into the area saying it would take 3 days to kill them off. But that just made them migrate into the attic.

Then we called him back again and made him get into the attic and he used this firework like device that had to be lit, and spun around on a stick by it's wn momentum. The attic door was then closed and this distributed some gas all over the attic. And that was that really. Should probably get up there with a sweeping brush to clean them up and burn them out the back while dancing on them at the same time :D

    Jesus H!!

I wouldn't be able to sleep if I know that was in my attic.
Have you not been stung in your house yet?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,558 ✭✭✭netwhizkid

Lots of jam jar filled with a dollop of honey and fill up with water they will dive in for they honey and get drowned. You could try biological war and introduce a species that will kill the wasps, alternatively get a couple of air/con machine up there and freeze em out. It looks like another winter in the trenches Binomate! Boards.ie will provide the necessary satire needed to fight this one out.

You need to locate the external entrance to the nest. Once you've done that you need three tihngs to solve your problem.

    1) An extension lead

    2) A Vacuum cleaner

    3) Patience

Me neither. I have a fear of anything that has more than 4 legs.

I've had my own wasp experience: I was in my cousin's house and they have a stairs, not unlike this, up to some attic rooms. So I'm standing under the stairs so it's running over my head. I start resting my hands on a step that's over my head. After a while I start moving my hand around and I feel some weird, crispy things. I then do a kind of chin up to see what it is I'm feeling. Suddenly, right in front of my eyes, is graveyard of wasps! I'm struck with fear and just back away quickly and he's like, "Yeah, that's been happening a few times..." as though he's telling me about a bathroom door that won't close properly! ****ed up!

    I also suggest a pro.

Yeah, that was just about what I was thinking. It's what I do when I get invaded by ants. However they dont get angry and start stinging. Maybe wear lots of layers, cover your whole body apart from your eyes. And get some welding glasses to protect your eyes:cool: and head up there with the vacume.

You could play the theme to Ghostbusters on a loop to inspire you.

    Probably some smell or something.

The plans are made. I've already started on my protective suit that I'm going to wear. Instead of going for the usual method of building a suit that the wasp stings will not be able to penetrate I have gone for a new untested method of building my protective suit. The suit will function and protect me mainly on the suits ability to blend in to their wasp culture. This will reduce the possibilities of being stung to great effect (in theory) as they will think I am one of them.

Man, unrelated but after you get rid of those wasps you really should get a hammer and bend those nails onto the rafters, they could leave someone with a pretty sore head if they stood up too quickly in your attic .

There are a few nails alright, I was working on some roofs over the summer so I'm well used to recognising them, three 3inch and one 4 inch steel nails here if I'm not mistaken .

Befriend them first. earn their trust...then, in time interbreed with them.
then train them for your evil plans for world domination :v: :):D

But I don't want to dominate the world, and I certainly don't want to live in a wasps nest with a mrs. wasp. Could you imagine if she got angry?

    I can only imagine:D

    I hope:rolleyes:
