    Is it possible to get diseases from a turtle? My friend is feeling sick and a few days earlier she picked up a turtle. Watcha think?

    It depends on what you mean by sick.

    If its a stomach bug then yes, turtles are a known salmonella risk and you should wash your hands well after handling them.

    She should go to a doctor.

    They can be carriers of salmonella as can other pets, but that idea was mainly put about to try and disuade people from keeping them as pets(due to so many dying from lack of proper care). In fact if they do have salmonella, it can indicate poor care conditions as it affects them too(not as obviously though).

    Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Discussion about zoonosis (infections from animals) is a good a extensive discussion - if you are personally worried or about someone else - you should go to a doctor.

    I will permit this thread so long as (and ONLY) it remains a general discussion on animal transmissible diseases.

    yeah turtles, especially the ones you get as pets are dirty little yokes. as wibbs said, most are carriers of salmonella which makes you grow an adipose fin and give you strong biting jaws.
