Im doing some research for my dad on getting a new car for 06. Now he wants a 1.4 because it does not burn as much fuel. Now which is the best one to buy out of the 3 of these or could you recommend any other type of car.

    Toyota Prius 1.5
    Toyota Corolla 1.4 D-4D Diesel
    Skoda New Octavia Classic 1.4

    Toyota Prius 1.5
    Toyota Corolla 1.4 D-4D Diesel
    Skoda New Octavia Classic 1.4

    Toyota Prius:
Initial cost is too expensive imo (€29k?) to make any real saving, better off buying a good diesel car instead unless he is a serious friend of the earth member.

    Toyota Corolla 1.4 D4D:
1.4 90bhp diesel costs about €2.5k more than the 1.4 petrol version so if he is not doing a bit of mileage or keeping it for a long time you may not make that difference back. Also there is a new model due next year.

    Skoda Octavia 1.4 Classic:
Good value for money but if he can spend a bit more on the Ambient model he will get far better standard equipment. 1.4 has only 75bhp so don't expect it to set the road alight. Even better if he can afford one of the diesel engine versions but tax and insurance is higher.

    Alternatives:

    Ford Focus/Mazda 3 1.6 diesel:
They are basically the same car and use the Peug/Citroen 1.6 HDi diesel engine which has 110bhp. Again these cars cost about €2k - €3k more than the 1.4 petrol equivilant so he is paying more initially.
