One for both Cable/MMDS and Satellite users, so I've posted it here...

A short titbit in the media section of the Irish Independent business supplement today... apparently Channel Five are considering an ROI advertising opt-out to be launched in the new year, according to one advertising agency.

Of course there would need to be something to opt-out from, meaning there is the possiblity of - eight year later - the final UK terrestrial channel arriving at last in the Republic...

And IMHO it may be just for advertising. NI currently doesn't have a seperate region - it is currently part of the "South Central" region, with such places as Oxford, Swansea and Penzance - oh it's just a stone's throw away.

I'm not sure whether the regions are available on digital - this may just be analogue. Surely, however, it would make sense to lump NI in with the North of England or Scotland. The reason why it doesn't have its own region, however, is due to analogue coverage. Maye the increased up-take of digital has made them think about a seperate region for NI. And given the lucrative nature of the ROI market, they may lump that in too.

What's the chances that the cableco's are working on a deal with five, now that UTV is FTA on satellite?

very good but i see no reason for Sky not to approach them either but they wont as it will probably cost them money

Yes, true. Also, on ICDG Sat, there's rumour of a new channel, five.2 which might have something to do with it? Perhaps they'll want their digital-only five.2 to be like E4, More4, etc and be available to ROI with advert optouts
