Latest forecasts for tomorrow are looking pretty stormy for sure.

    http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/brack0.gif

Whats likely to be different about tomorrows storm compaired to Sunday/Mondays..

    1) The time this is going to take, Mondays greatest winds happened within a relatively short time frame and really only were at damaging speed of the far northwest coast, thus it wasnt really a newsmaker..
Winds tomorrow are likely to be strong to gale force for many hours over a large part of the country.

    2) The cold front passes slowly..this is where the greatest potential for severe gusting occurs..there will be a sustained period of strong gusting even after the main frontal bands have passed through

    3) The winds have a more westerly component.
This means gusts on the eastern seaboard are likely to be stronger than on Mondays event, dont be fooled if during the intial passage of the storm we are relatively unaffected (sheltered by the Wicklow mountains) , when the cold front passes the winds do swing to the west and this will mean a sudden intensification in speed and likely a significant jump in gust speed.

Even if the gust speets in Belmullet etc on Monday are not broken tomorrow, there is much greater potential for dmage in the heavily populated east coast and pretty much the whole of the Western seaboard and Northern Ireland.

    Max gust speeds..

Western and Northern areas - sustained 50mph winds with gusts in the 70mph range, a few exposed places may get considerably higher.

Midland , East and South East - Sustained winds in the 30-40mph range with a stong possiblilty of a prelonged period late afternoon of gusting into the 60mph range or even higher in some particularily exposed locations.

It will of course also be wet with the risk of localised flooding.

All in all a nasty period of weather from Friday morning onwards into early Saturday when it looks like becoming decidedly cooler but drier and less windy.

Thankfully the worst of this should be during the middle of the afternoon when a lot of us won't be on the road, if you are on the road late afternoon (2-5pm), be aware there may some very strong gusts in elevated or exposed areas and drive accordingly.

Well , I think its as accurate as can be with current information.
Its not going to be a major storm in comparison to other years, but is still likely to be there in the top 5 for the autumn/winter period imho so is worthy of its own discussion.
Its not a cower in your basement type discussion, more a heads up lads, its gona be unpleasant outside. There is always a few places that get wrecked in these type of conditons, but dont think its going to be widespread.

So what's your conditions for an edible hat this time :p

Looking forward to my anemometer getting a workout. My strongest gusts are usually from the west, so maybe I'll get the 65mph gust that I thought I'd get last monday.

Well it was a wet night in galway with loads of drizzle, but it's dried out now and the wind has really started to pick up

Gust of 40kts / 46mph recorded at cork airport in the last hour.

    Casement 38 kts gust
    Dublin Airport 37kts
    Roches point 36kts

alot of stations not reporting wind.

and the radar reflection over scotland looks really nasty.

I would imagine that a way to recognise when this has peaked is when the winds are from the NW. at the moment they are SW. the winds would be strongest when they are coming from the W.

UPDATE Gust of 60mph at Belmullet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

Been force 7 to 8 at Belmullet for most of night. Max gust of 65mph.

    at 07z

    Belmullet 35G52 Kts

    Rosslare gust to 57mph.

With me gale gusts for past 4 hours and mean speed up to 27mph.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

    08z

    Belmullet 36G61(70mph)

    Roches Point 39G42

Can't believe that gust is so little above mean at Roches Point, so maybe incorrect.

I now don't think I'll see 65mph, or even 60mph. Just a windy day in the East, though having said there may be an interesting squall line, which could give a very gusty minute or 2

Mean up to 30mph and rising with gust to 50mph

    LoL

Even my ground based anemometer has another new record...

46mph at 916am with the average at 33.4

Records increasing at 1mph increments-these winds are such a tease :p

Full gale at Casement with 35G56Kts

    Also 70mph gust at Rosslare

Very very windy up here in Knock Airport. Nearly tipped the trusty van over driving up this morning.

Cold front has passed through, hardly noticeable except that pressure is rising and temp is dropping.
Last gale gust (39mph) was nearly 2 hours ago.

Picking up at Malin Head with 68mph gust. I'd expect it to get stronger there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

    75mph gust at malin head
    60mph gust at belmulet
    59mph gust at finner

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

    Malin Head gusting to 75mph.

    Nothing of note in Wicklow

    Remarkable drop in temperature!!!

6.3 c now as opposed to nearly 13c earlier and theres still bright sunshine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

Nothing impressive really today then, apart from the splash of sleet in 4.8c temps at 6.30 going home along the N8.

    That was probably soft Hail
Valentia reported heavy hail earlier and the temp in mulligar dropped temporarally to 4c in a similar shower in the afternoon also.

Still its quite a temperature change everywhere.

5.3 c here now and breezy up to 15mph from the west.

the wind was practically a non event where I live, wasnt nearly as strong as what we had last week and even that wasnt that bad but what I have noticed now is just how cold its become, very chilly outside indeed.

I so want to say that you did a WC on it, but I won't ;)

Afterall there was 75mph gusts on north coast in an "exposed area" and inland gale in places.

Gusts to 100mph off NW coast of Scotland.

There was a report of a weather related fatality in Kerry, a youth blown by a gust of wind infront of a lorry.

While we all like to get excited about extreme weather, It must be also borne in mind that people can get killed.

Live in Tramor myself. Which is right beside the sea. Not far from my house either, got a great view :D

Monday was bad. Very windy, found it slightly tough to walk on. Something that doesnt happen every winter!

Friday: Started of ok. By about 10AM the rain was heavy. Wind was slightly high but nothing like Mondays winds. 20mins later, no more rain. Winds a bit high and it was warm, wasnt long for the winds calmed down.

So much for a "Stormy Friday" down here :P Guess Earthman's and weather-wateverheiscalled-dude both got predictions wrong for this area at least :/

What was it like up yer ends? was it the "Stormy Friday" anticpated??
