Next week I will be out on my own without a job. I don't know what to do as I have no qualifications and I don't want to take a ****ty job in Dunnes or anything. Job sites return no results really. I have enough money to last me a while.

What can I do? What are my options?

Goto Fas. Do a course. Get paid while doing said course. Get a job afterwards.

You mightnt have any qualifications, but have you any work experience?
    Whats your area?
If not... you might have no other choice but to start low and work your way up.

Go to recruitment agencies and look for entry level jobs...there are loads of them out there, or even write a cover letter to companies with CV looking for entry level work. Best places would be financial services AIB, BOI etc sales jobs and consultancy jobs.

Im based in Galway and am fairly competent with computers. Ive fixed loads of them in my time. Plus, I looked after a companys network and computers for about a year.

The only job id be eligible for though is technician - never see anything advertised though.

I think you have to be unemployed for x amount of months before your eligable for a fas/vtos course.

So that may not be an option.

Instead consider taking a job in the likes of Aldi (good hourly rate) and do a night class for qualifications like A+ , MCP's etc. Knowing your doing to study will keep you sane!

I have seens a few entry level jobs osted from time to time, but if your competing with someone who has a little experieice, and a qualification too, you may find it hard to ge the job!

    X

What did you work as for the past while? Some places see a few years of experience on par with qualification, tbh.

mmm, i was working freelance for a while (something else im not interested in pursuing) and fixing the odd computer. I was using an office of a fairly high-profile company while administering there systems (quite abit of work involved) though I wasn't on the payroll. Im leaving next week. I dont know if I can put this down as work exp. on my cv as theres no proof seen as I wasn't on the payroll. I was on the payroll for the first year. It would be all too confusing to have to explain to an employer. Doing this though, I have two years exp. (so I know quite abit).

Theres no way id work in aldi or anywhere like that tbh but thanks for the idea anyways. I just couldn't do it. Also, I am currently studying for A+. but I don't think I could put the fact im studying for it on the cv.

    Computer technician certification from compTIA.

Half baked technicians are everywhere, and paid pittance. Either get certified, and sort out your skillset by doing a course to get some qualifications or do something else. Getting work thats unpaid, or paid very little is easy. The challenge comes when you try to get a decent wage for what you know/do. Then you'll find out how much the market values your skillset.

You can put the fact that you are studying for the A+ down. Useless certificatation by the way. I think it is excellent but the market doesn't value it- get an MCSE or a CCNA.

I have PM'd you but why not Aldi?

If you move to Dublin you can call CPL and get a job on the HP helpdesk in 5 minutes **** money, crap conditions but any techie person at all can walk into a job there.
If you want to be a technician plan your career, where will you be in 5 years?
What certs do you need for that?

    Get them.
If the crowd you were working for will give you a reference put them down.

If they won't put them down anyway.

A CV is an advertisement it is nt legally binding, neither is a job description.

EMPLOYERS CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS.

get an MCSE or a CCNA

The A+ can be used in conjunction with the Network+ as an elective for an MCSE/A. And it'll take him a lot of time and money to get his MCSE, he might as well start with something that can be put on a CV.

You could always not work for a while! Catch up on your reading; take a holiday; develop a hobby. Sounds to me like you're working too hard anyway. There's no point in rushing right into another job if you have enough money to support yourself.

    Celestica maybe?

I'm taking my two A+ exams next week, hopefully it'll be a piece of pee.

Personally I think any IT qualification, A+ even a MOUS shows someone is serious about IT as a career and not just falling from one job to the next. Obviously you get people with qualifications who are useless but you should be able to weed these out in the interview or the trial period. I've not met anyone with an A+ who was completely useless. However I met a lot of people with diplomas and degrees, who would be dangerous with a crayon.

If you can't get a full time work in your area, get part-time work. Or do a course. or do a course and work part time. The important thing is to demonstrate that you are a good worker, and have a good head on your shoulders. Usually that means you have goal that you are working towards.
