But since I can't connect to the internet on my home pc (where the virus is) how can I get the download onto my home pc?

Sounds like the virus I fixed at the weekend. You will need CWShredder to finally get rid of it. Ad-Aware and Spybot S & D won't fix it.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have that back on my system. I suspect there's still some strange virus present but at least it lets me log onto the internet. I tried cwshredder and that found nothing. Any other good free virus scans? (I also tried avg and ad-aware).

Don't confuse AV software with Spyware scanners. AVG is a very good AV package. Ad-Aware and Spybot look for spyware not viruses.

try Avast! anti-virus (see the link below). Like AVG, this is also a great free anti-virus product. Alternatively, you can go to somewhere like downloads.com and download a 15 day trial of norton anti-virus (although not sure how good it is).

What's the difference between the two (sorry, excuse my ignorance!).

?You can try Panda Anti Virus online Active Scan. You need to use i.e., switch of any pop-up blockers and allow an active-x component install. It's helped me out a couple of times but I only recommend it as a final resort. Does work reasonably well though...

Click the link for a newly set up government web site that should answer your questions about spyware, antivirus etc. http://www.makeitsecure.ie/home.asp

Not sure how much you know. so here goes:

*surf on trusted sights - however, it's not always possible to know this.

*download a decent web broweser i.e. firefox
    http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

*Download an anti-virus programme. if, like me, you're doing it on the cheap, AVG or !avast will do just fine.

    *Download a firewall like ZoneAlarm
    http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=GB&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_zass

*Finally download Ad-Aware and something like Spybot
    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

    sorry about all the links.
I run all these programmes (all free btw) and so far i have had no problems. if you know this already i apologise.

    hope it helps!!

    :::edit:::
make sure to keep all these things updated or else they are of little use. udually they are automatic, but not in all cases.

From what I've found it isn't new and after reviewing it, whilst it has 'Some' reasonable advice it is misleading in key areas and does little to offer solutions other than two 'Corparate' solutions....

Might be the reason he/she came here instead ;)

    typical!

tbh, i just saw it advertised in the newspaper - didn't look at it in any detail myself. oh well!!

    typical!

tbh, i just saw it advertised in the newspaper - didn't look at it in any detail myself. oh well!!

First came across it on national telivision, rte/network 2 have been promoting the living day lights out of it. Being the 'Nosy' git I am I had to give it a look over.

Some of the information there is good if a bit vague in some areas. There discription of virii for instance. The two recommended software solutions are ridiculiss. Microsft Anti - Spy, whilst a good responce finally to the problems, is not a tried and tested solution. It is still in 'Beta' meaning that whilst stable 'Issues' can or could arise.

It is really meant for advanced users who know how to recover there system. The people who that site is aimed at just don't have that technical knowledge and could further damage there systems trying to fix them.

There second option Symantec solutions (Better known as Norton Anti Virus) has a long history of being compromised by trojan horse type virus. Just do a search in google for "known faults with norton anti virus". Just last year there whole anti virus solution platform was totally compromised across all platforms from Corparate level to home end user level.

Still it is a start towards giving people some of the basics but it needs more options and advice areas on what to do when compromised. good places you can go for help, that kind of thing...

    You should use:

    Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Pro
    ZoneAlarm Pro
    Ad-Aware SE Personal
    Spy Sweeper

I've tested by myself and I can tell you that your computer will be 98% secure.
