    Hi,

    I have a problem, every time I start up or log into windows XP, I get This window it always appears when I start up and always disappears when I click okay. And surprisingly enough it never pop up on my sister’s screen name when she logs into the same pc! I asked some about it one time and they said it was something to do with very old software I had installed on my system. I would like to get rid of it, as it is quite annoying. It always pops up alongside my skydsl dvb data box, which tells me my satellite signal strength and what transponder I’m on. I am okay with that popping up, as it is to do with my satellite broadband from skydsl. I spoke to Dell, (I got my pc from them) and they recommended, a spyware cleaner as they seem to think it is spyware related, But I’d reckon otherwise as if it was Norton Anti-Virus should have caught it. They also said something about windows registry, but that sounded too big a job to go doing for such a small fiddly thing !

    Any help on how to get rid of the 16bit program popup would be very much appreciated.

    You've been given the correct advice, yet you think you know better?

    Norton does not catch all spyware, if any.
    Use Lavasoft Adaware, or Spybot Search & Destroy to clean your system.
    After you've done that post back here if the problem re-occurs and we'll go through the steps involved in properly troubleshooting it.

    I downloaded Spybot Search & Destroy and it said i was clear and i had immediate threats. Would this point to something else ? I remember last April when this pc crashed and i got it fixed by a family friend, this problem has been on it since that day, (i lost all my files as it was infected with a virus) He said that the pop-up was caused by some old software installed :confused:

    thanks for your help so far :)

    did you upgrade from win98?

    start->run
    type msconfig
    <enter>
    click the startup tab
    figure out which app is causing the message
    uncheck it

    Thanks a million rkm, I didn't upgrade from Win98, well personally i did, but not computer wise! My new PC came with xp home edition and your brilliant tip has got rid of this annoying thing now :) It was being caused by a software called ocraware, it is an OCR software, that i occasionally use dating from sometime in 1999 or before it. It found it's want to my new pc when i had the drivers of my scanner re-installed on my new pc after it got infected in April, It was a simple as that. Thanks again anyway.

    And WizZard thank you for your help, I am sure I would have got it done with your help too btw. This computer forum will soon be the target of Microsoft and Dell as it will be doing their expensive technical help out of business.

    Brilliant work fellas!
